Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I think I need to drop Latin for at least one dc. (I have already dropped it for my high schooler who had enough FL requirement; it was an extra) We are doing LC II (the online class) and it is terrible. He can't spell English well so therefore Latin is twice as hard to spell. He keeps getting them wrong on the online quizzes because of spelling, punctuation, etc. and it is frustrating both of us. He now hates Latin. I try to help him as much as I can, but with 7 dc, it is hard. I am feeling pulled. I want to continue with it because I see so much value in it, but he is only in 7th grade. But if I don't do it, I would have to add a vocabulary program and a grammar program. I am doing Latin for these two subjects. My dh agreed to dropping voc. and grammar for Latin. I am just feeling sadness over doing this. Has anyone else had to let something good go?

Heaps...right now I'd like to drop the lot and just hang out!! For us Latin is a Slooooooow process...we just cover the material slowly and when we get time. Henle units one and two have taken most of 2 years. We are on the slow boat!

We dropped Latin after 3 boys and my daughter is taking Spanish as a freshmen with no Latin background. I told her she can go back to Latin later on in high school if time allows and she has the desire. She was a late reader and still struggles with pronouncing age-related words.
So....why push Latin on her? It's not worth it.
There are other important subjects that will outlast Latin, in my opinion, for some children.

By the way, I pushed my oldest 2 in Latin with Henle's to the point of them hating it too. I regret it because neither of the 2 older boys who are in college continued with a language after that. Now son #2 really regrets it. Latin just isn't for everybody, especially to the point after LC 1 and 2 and Henle's. He sorely wishes he had studied Spanish even for a year or two.
Don't burn your child out....it won't pan out in the long run.

Blessings,
Stephanie

We did two years of Latin with an online class. It was very demanding. This year we decided to drop latin and learn French together as a family. Everyone is LOVING it.

I, too, wanted everyone to learn Latin...but it is an inflected language which can be difficult. one of our sons who did very well in latin can't believe how quickly he is getting french and he asked me where are the charts with all the endings..i said there aren't any. He said, you mean you don't even have to change the ending of your french name? Nope.

Lisa, We have dropped Latin more than once in the past. It is back in the schedule for my eldest this year, but just a little bite each day.

Kristie, My understanding is that Henle Units I and II are supposed to take two years. I am using a lesson plan book from Memoria Press (I think) and that is how it is outlined. Either way, I am sure it will take us that long--just a bit each day. However, it is the most success that my son has had with really grasping Latin. I think I introduced it too early in the past.

Well, we decided to drop it. It was just too much for him and me and he claims to hate Latin which I definently don't want. We will still work on prayers, songs, and some vocabulary. He has a wonderful memory so I am hoping he retains some of it for high school.
