Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If anyone has a daughter who is studying WWII I highly recommend Margot Benary-Isbert.

My 17 yr dd and I have been reading her books and love them. It really gives you an idea what Germany went through during and after the war. How the people really thought and what it was like for them afterwards. Even during the seperation of East and West Germany. Here is the list of books we have read.

The Ark
Rowan Farm
The Long Way Home
Castle on the Border
Dangerous Spring

The first 3 would make great read alouds, but the last 2 are probably more for girls in their teens.

Just thought I would share these wonderful books.

Thank you!
Dd will be doing an intense study of WWII all spring and summer. Are these books read in order?

They are listed in our favorites. But if you read The Ark the second one to it is Rowan Farm. And yes you do encounter some of the same characters in the other books. So I think the list I made is probably a good order.

Thanks Jackie but our library doesn't seem to have these -- I just HATE that!

My sons loved the Winged Watchman by Hilda Van Stockum. It may be below your son's reading level, but it's a great story.

Has anyone had boys enjoy the Benary-Isbert books, or are they strictly for girls?

The Ark, Rowan Farm and The Long Way home are good for both boys and girls. The Long Way home is a great one for boys because it is about a boy (age 11 I think) who makes his way from East Germany to the United States. It is a very good book we LOVED it!The Ark and Rowan Farm are told from the oldest girls view but it is about a family trying to adjust after the war and is more about family than the one girl. All her books involves animals, the main charcter has a love for animals and wants to work on a farm to help raise dogs. The books help you to understand what Germany was like after the war and what families had to go through. Really made an impact with us.
