Has anyone used it or is currently using it? I'd like to get some feedback before I make a final decision on purchasing the curriculum. I'll be using it for my 1st grader. Thanks!

I use RC History with my family. What kind of questions do you have? Maybe I can help.
God bless,
Christine

I was just a little unsure of how to purchase the series. From my understanding I need to use the New Catholic picture bible and some of the literature books that go along with it. Is that correct? Also is it very time consuming? My daughter likes history and last year we used Story of the World, it was great but I felt not appropriate for Kindergarten. It was a little to advanced. I see that RC is broken down into levels K-3, but many companies say it's for 1st grade level and when I read through it I feel the same way as I did with Story of the World ( a little to advanced). In your experience with your 5 and 6 year old did they do good using this program?
Thanks so much.

My 5 and 6 year olds tag along with the older ones while we go through the program. They listen to the stories and enjoy the crafts and coloring. They especially like the Great Adventure Kids Coloring Book and card games. I do not do any set curriculum for 5 and 6 year olds. Now, when someone told me that when my oldest were 5 and 6, I thought they were crazy and that I HAD to do "school" with them. Really, now I see that they don't need anything set, just lots and lots of read-alouds.
That said, if you want to cover history with your read-alouds, I think RC History would be a great fit! I really like RC History a lot. It keeps it Catholic and I don't have to sort through books at the library trying to find books that don't have questionable material. It's done for me by I source I feel has the same values I do. Be sure to do lots of hands-on and coloring with that, too, especially with little ones.
If you purchase RC History now, you'll have the program to use again when you come back to this time period later in your homeschool journey. You'll have the booklists to take with you to book sales so you can build up your collection slowly. You can also purchase the books that you find to be age appropriate and a good fit for your family. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Does that help any? I don't know how clear I am being right now. If you have further questions, just ask. I'll be glad to help when I can.
God bless,
Christine

I just finished Kindergarten using a charter school. As you said I thought I had to do school with my daughter and that was also the philosophy of the charter school. She was doing Language Arts, Science, History, Geography, Math and P.E. for kindergarten! It was a very strict schedule that required her to do at least 4 hours a day! That's when I decided to start doing this on my own (well not really on my own, under Immaculate Heart Academy)Now i am picking and choosing my own curriculum that I feel best meet her needs and learning ability. She is very bright, much more advanced than I was at her age! She is reading on her own, she can use the computer better than I can, and most importantly she has a desire to learn about our faith. All that said do you think this is a good choice. I don't want her to get burnt out since her first year was so rigorous.
About the reading list, can you find these at the library or do you need to purchase them from a catholic book seller? You also mentioned something about book sales. I'm new at this so i'm still trying to learn. If I do decide to purchase this curriculum what would the bare essentials needed to start be?

I do think RC History is a good choice. Especially if you don't push too much and let her set the pace. I'll give you another example from our house. When my oldest 2 were 2nd and 3rd grade, we started RC History Volume 1. We did a lot of projects and Bible reading. When we got to Egypt, we couldn't leave I think we were there the rest of the year. I used all the supplemental resources for Egypt, even some in the higher level and some I found from other recommendations. We had so much fun with it, though I thought we'd never be able to pull the kids into the next era. This past year, my oldest were in 3rd and 4th grades and my 6 year old was in K (she was 5 most of the year). We finally left Egypt and went to Greece. Same thing happened. They loved Greece, Greek myths, etc. We used all the resources there, too. My 3rd grade son even is studying Greek with Hey Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek (it's a GREAT, slow progressing Greek course). I have 1 more Greek study I want to do this summer then my goal is to get everyone to Rome (I wish literally, but I am talking historical Rome) and get to the New Testament finishing Volume 1 this year. If we get into Volume 2, great, but I'm not going to count on it RC History is a spine, it is as much as you want it to be or as little as you want it to be. As you can see, some units we flew through, barely touching on them and others we stayed in A LONG time.
As for the reading list, a lot of the books you can find at the library, if you have a decent library system. I would borrow as many as you can and then purchase your favorites as finances allow. Bare essentials to own, in my opinion, are the Great Adventure Kids kit, Usborn Ancient World, and a Children's Bible. The Bible History text by Johnson, Hannan, and Dominica is excellent, too, even for the younger crowd. Not totally essential, but you'll probably want to do some of the craft books and literature books. Oh, and for Egypt, I recommend "Boy of the Pyramids" from Simply Charlotte Mason (it's not on RC History's list, I don't think). Also, if you can afford it, I HIGHLY recommend Jeff Cavin's Great Adventure CDs for you and your husband (not the kids). It really makes this stuff all come together! I have learned A LOT and it makes teaching so much easier.
I hope that helps some, please keep asking if you need any clarification or have more questions
God bless,
Christine

Wow! Your my angel! Thanks so much! I feel so much more comfortable purchasing this curriculum now. I like the fact that it is for a variety of age levels since I will be using it for my two boys (2 1/2 and 5 months) when they get old enough!

No, it's a red book with a Roman helmet:
http://www.amazon.com/Ancient-World-Internet-Linked-History/ dp/0794508162/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246623598&sr=8 -1
The Time Traveler book is really great too I have a love for good book, so I tend to buy a lot of them. So choose what's good for your family and don't over-extend yourself. We don't have the best library system and I like to have a good home library. You never know when a kid's going to want to read a book
I enjoy helping, so keep asking if you need to. I'll do my best to check in now and then.
God bless,
Christine
