Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anybody know of any good picture books about the War of 1812?

We went to Lake Erie over the weekend and now my 5 year old is fascinated with the Battle of Lake Erie, Perry, and the War of 1812

Not a huge selection of picture books for this period and I definitely don't know of anything myself for that particular battle. There are some juvenile non-fiction books that address the time frame, but the list here are ones that I consider a more true picture book.

Dolley Madison Saves George Washington (Don Brown) – about the burning of Washington DC during the War of 1812

Who Let Muddy Boots into the White House? A Story of Andrew Jackson (Robert Quackenbush)

There are numerous picture books that cover the Battle of Fort McHenry and the Star Spangled Banner:
The Flag Maker (Steven Kroll) - the story of Caroline Pickersgill and her mother, Mary, a Baltimore flagmaker commissioned to sew the huge Fort McHenry flag that inspired the "Star-Spangled Banner." Tells much about Baltimore during this period of the War of 1812.

By the Dawn's Early Light (Steven Kroll ) - story book depiction of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key. Beautiful illustrations with an "old" feel.

Star Spangled Banner (Peter Spier)

The Star Spangled Banner (Amy Winstead)

-----
The Star Spangled Banner (Catherine A. Welch) - an early reader, not a true picture book

Cornstalks and Cannonballs (Barbara Mitchell)– a slightly long picture book

The Battle for St. Michaels (Emily Arnold McCully) – an early reader, not a true picture book

Mary, you are so thorough. I found this book at my library and thought it was very nice, outstanding actually for the I Can Read Books. But you already mentioned it!

Thanks ladies, I just added this to my "library loan" list for weeks 20-23 in our history study (along with some others I had not seen before) .

Sleeping Bear Press has one being published this spring. It looks really good.

The Town that Fooled the British: A War of 1812 Story (Lisa Papp)

It is about the Battle of St. Michaels in Maryland.
