Calling all you Australia 4realers...
My mom is going to Australia for the month of July to do some work for her Apostolate. I would love to follow her path through the continent. Does anyone have any great geography websites for this??? My kids are ages 9 and younger so I want to focus on the basics and geography.
She will be in Sydney, Perth, Parramatta, Adelaide, Melborne and some other cities.
Any help would be great.
Thanks!

There are lots of Aussie ladies here who will help I am sure.
Also we are going "down under" for the first stop in our Round the World tour (world geography and cultures study) - I have handwritten lists of all our resources which I am hoping to get typed up soon. If you send me a pm with your email I will send you the books, movies, games, manipulatives we are using.

Hi Mimi
here are my resources - hope they are useful to you.
Going Down Under
I will be changing and adding more as I fine tune my schedule and plans - this is just from my initial handwritten notes.

I go straight to the source. Erin compiled a great list at Aussie Book Threads.
We've found through her suggestions Complete Adventures of Blinky Bill and Seven Little Australians by Ethel Turner at a used booksale (AUS versions). We're reading Blinky Bill now. I loved the second, but ds is too young yet for it. But both are fun books.

Thanks for mentioning Jenn - Erin's lists are AWESOME. The only problem I have is that I tend to use mainly the library for resources (limited budget) and I have had trouble finding a lot of the Australian books even through ILL - so I have had to make my list of Aussie books available in US libraries. I would love to find a cheap copy of Seven Little Australians - especially because Erin and her seven little Australians plus one are good friends of ours!

My goal is to add more in print books, I just need to read them first. Unfortunately for you the majority of books listed are from my shelves and are OOP.
The picture book list; Around Australia, that I link to, has in print books that would have a better chance of being in your libraries.

I'm using this at the moment with my 6 and 8 yr olds:
Are we there yet by Alison Lester ISBN: 9780670880676
Its about an Australian family who go round Aust in their campervan. We are using it as a unit study at the moment. Doesn't have Parramatta but does do a good coverage of all the states.

Parramatta is a suburb of Sydney. Downunder Literature has some lovely resources and lists to look at.

Are We There Yet is a GREAT book. I love it!
We live in the Diocese of Parramatta.
here is some info on the history and on the Diocese.
Here is a unit of work on the making of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Also one on Gold in Australia and the bushranger, Ned Kelly and his armour.
More - Where in the world is Australia? and Resources for teachers on Australia.

The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter are in Parramatta, I wonder if your mum will be meeting with them Mimi. They are wonderful priests, they come and help our PP with the latin mass in Perth here when he needs it.
We lived in Sydney for a year,by Botany bay, but only ever drove through Parramatta.
With our unit study 'Journey around Australia' what I have been doing, since I don't have many resources and some of the places are hard to find books on is googling the place we want to look at, we read through whatever seems interesting, then I take narrations for them which we then glue into a journal. They draw a few pictures if they want, we print off pics which they also glue in and colour and they add captions to explain their drawings and the pics. Oh and a map of Aust is in the front of the journal and we mark the place we are looking at on it as we do them.
'Are we there yet' is not too expensive, and in print, and we have really been enjoying using it as a jump off text.
If your eldest likes animals, specifically horses, they might enjoy The Silver Brumby series by Elyne Mitchell. I learnt so much from them about Aust flora and fauna as a child.
I have heard the Down under Lit books are great, I was hoping to get some from them soon.
