Ever been just bursting to share a resource find? Well I stumbled on something this weekend I'm excited to share. Maybe I'm the only one who will think this is so cool, but hopefully it will interest you as well. I don't think it has ever been mentioned here (and if it was and I missed it, boy am I sorry). I also googled around and it is mentioned on a few blogs but not many, so don't think most in the Catholic homeschooling circles are aware of it.
A little background...we have an annual Catholic History Fair here (topic for a whole new thread as well) and this year my son is doing a display on Casimir Pulaski a Polish military general who fought and died for American freedom in our revolution. We knew he was Catholic (the reason we picked him for the project) and I was hoping to find some specific Catholic information about him (beyond the little I knew about his schooling at a Theatine college in Warsaw). So in following various links on-line I found this section of a comic book that tells his story -
Count Casimir Pulaski - America's Immigrant Catholic Hero . I can't adequately express how excited I was at this discovery...
So then I did a little more searching through this site and find out it is part of a whole series of comic books published by Pflaum from 1947-1972. The title was Treasure Chest of Fun & Fact. The ones that are no longer under copyright (up to the mid 1960's) have been scanned page by page and are archived at this site which is part of Catholic University of America's archives. The comics were originally published for use in Catholic schools during those years and covered topics of the Catholic faith and American history/patriotism. There are a huge variety of topics covered - as well as puzzles, games, activities. I've spent a few hours there and am just scratching the surface.
Other samples of history topics:
God's Frontiersmen: John Caroll, Archbishop of Baltimore
Padre of the Missions
It even covers its own history of the Pflaum publishing group.
Of course not all the historical subjects are Catholic. It covers a wide variety of topic, but the Church and the Faith are part of many of the history sections.
I'm going to be posting some sample links for the comics in other threads because the subject matter covers many areas, just in case you're wondering why this resource will be popping up everywhere.

Oh and I was going to ask if anyone remembers these from when they were still being published? Some of the blog posts I found about them were from people who remembered these from their youth. I don't, though I was just starting school when they were ending their publication so only a couple years of overlap. And if our Catholic school got them it must have been in upper grades. So this was a totally new discovery for me - not a re-discovery, and I am loving looking through them. Just wondering if they are familiar to anyone and bring back memories?
I do need to add that you have to consider the time period these were written, too - in some of the sections I have read they use terminology that is not considered appropriate today, nothing horrible, just not the preferred terms. Let's just say I found some that are not PC.

Wow and Wow and WOW!
Thanks, Mary! This is absolutely fabulous. Now that I see the images online, I know I've stumbled across one or two, as they look familiar, but I had no idea of the length and breadth of their publication.
This is fabulous. So perfect for my boys. And now that I have a color printer....wahoo!

These are AMAZING! Ds will have a great time exploring, he's SO into comic books. It's hard to find appropriate ones. I WISH I had a color printer
God bless,
Christine

Yes, I fear we'll be going through ink rather quickly here...

GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!!
How did we not know about this before now???!!!
This is a goldmine, Mary! I'm bookmarking and pondering how I want to print these out... This would be so time and ink intensive, yet these are really such a treasure for our young men! I long to find a way.
What is so exciting is that the comic books are sorted in alphabetical order by title, subject matter, people as subjects. The subject matter is so extensive!
I wonder if Sophia, Ignatius, Neumann Press, TAN...or some Catholic publisher of out of print classics would consider reprinting these. I know Sophia and TAN have fallen on very hard times so I doubt they'd take on anything new...but I wonder if the others would consider it? Like I need another pet project on my plate! But, maybe just a quick email with a link in my spare time?
I did check ebay...even single copies are going for $5.00-ish. There are a couple of "lots" of these comics, but they are quite expensive...I suppose because they're collectible now.
Good grief...I'm going to be brainstorming this for some time...too much great stuff here not to! Thanks for finding this and posting it, Mary!!! What a find!

You are truly a marvel, MaryM ... btw, didn't you have a graduation this weekend -- how the heck did you find time to hunt for this?

Thank you MaryM!!!
These were a big part of my childhood. Not because they were published when I was in school but because we had a whole bunch of them from my (much ) older siblings.
I LOVED them and it was always frustrating when we'd be missing an issue of a continuing story! (Confession: I don't remember the Bible stories but I do remember Chuck White and another set of stories with a Spelunking adventure )
I'm going to go find out whatever happened to Chuck White in Lucerne!! (And then I'll read the Acts of the Apostles. )

That totally cracks me up, Jen. I saw that they had that continuing Chuck White story. I'm going to have to check him out. I think I would have loved it as a kid...

Love this!!!! There is The Battle of the Ironclads (ds' favorite topic)!
It's easier to flip through the pages if you save the jpeg image to your photo album.. Looks really nice on the iPad this way... a tiny bit easier anyway over clicking "next" and you can create separate albums for whatever stories you want to save
Really wish I had hard-copies though!

Still swooning... they have artists and composers too! And then to inventory WHICH saints they have and add those stories to our resource liturgical calendar.
So little time, so much treasure.

Actually I have started that. I have all the saints they have articles on with their current feast day. It all hand written in a notebook and need to put it in a document. Then I will upload it here. I have been adding them periodically to our resource calendar one at a time when I think of it.

Aren't they fabulous? My other problem is once I print them out, how to keep them handy? I don't want to put 3 holes in the print outs, but maybe that's the most efficient.

Not sure who remembers this thread or is familiar with the links we have from it throughout the forums. I discovered that they have recently moved the whole collection to another location (server?). Anyway, now none of the old links here work any longer - - . I am changing some as I have time, but just wanted to note the latest development for you all. The new location is really much easier to read and view the digitalized images, but the search feature leaves a lot to be desired compared to the old - so I am not finding stories very easily.
New address link for collections - Treasure Chest of Fun & Fact
