What about the study guides? If you used them were they helpful?

If it is the Hakim set, we used it with SL Core 100. I have to say, it was one of the times I really, really appreciated the Sonlight Instructor's Guide, as there are extensive notes in the IG about the information you are reading, other viewpoints, more info about things glossed over or left out, etc. So - we liked it - it was easy to read, and kept our interest, but I really appreciated having those notes to go along with it.

I bought the syllabus from Hewitt Homeschool. It's very inexpensive, and includes some projects and questions for each volume. I haven't used it yet, but it does look nice.

Fixed the links.
I have a mixed opinion on them. Early on in my homeschooling I loved them - they are very engaging and really get into the stories in a way that a textbook doesn't. But in using them I did find that I had to be careful on many topics. The author is biased against Christianity (among other things) and it shows. As Laura pointed out it would help to have something that gave you a heads up and helped discuss otehr viewpoints and worldviews. Definitely need to be covered together (not student alone) to address those points.
I have not seen or used the assessments. We do have some of the study/teacher guides which I think are okay but not anything spectacular. There are some good ideas and discussion starters.

Thanks for fixing my links! Sorry about that!
Good info to know about the Hakim series. We plan on covering the second part of US History and I'm trying to figure out what to use. Off to do more research

I have the whole series and all the TGs Mary Chris. You're welcome to come look at them. I agree that it's helpful to have the Sonlight IGs. I also have some notes from a member here, specifically addressing the Catholic issues.
I think these books are living books and it's exceedingly difficult to find living *textbooks* for history. We use them and we find the biases and talk about them.

We have used them with our 2 boys...and this year our 13 year old (third boy) read volumes 1-4. We use the Hewitt lesson plan also...very cheap. I usually break down the History of US over 2 years in 7th and 8th grade.
We also have the kids read lots of historical fiction along with the History of US going along with the each particular volume.
I, too, find them to be "living" textbooks and so easy to incorporate into the childrens studies. They always comment and find them interesting:)
And...it makes for good discussion.
