Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking at different American history programs for next year and I'm wondering what the difference is between the Mater Amabilis 3-year history course using How Our Nation Began and The Catholic Faith Comes to the Americas and the MODG American History for 4th and 5th grade using Our Pioneers and Patriots and historical fiction.

I'll be teaching American History to a 5th grader and a 2nd grader next year. I'd like my 2nd grader to be able to follow along, but it's more important to me that my 5th grader have a good introduction to American History. I don't see myself doing two separate American History programs with them next year, unless my 5th grader is able to do hers fairly independently. I am wondering if either the MA Introduction to American History for Level 1B or the MODG American History for 4th and 5th grade could be used across the age range I'll be teaching next year.

Any other suggestions for an introduction to American History would be welcome, too! Thanks!

Dawn

Hmmm...well, I've dabbled with both, so I'll take a stab. First off, MA uses Marshall's This Country of Ours (TCOO), not HONB. I think HONB is actually recommended by MODG for grade 3.

The approaches are similar, IMO. Both MA and MODG use the textbooks as spines and add in living books. If you already have Our Pioneers and Patriots, it's fairly easy to align the MA 1B History schedule with the units in that text. However, MA takes a much slower pace, and MODG suggests more living books.

Were you planning on getting the MODG 4th grade syllabus?   I'm guessing you'd like to have something already laid out for you. I'm currently working on a multi-level combination of just about EVEYRONE's ideas for our American History next year. I just couldn't find anything that suited my needs for the different levels, so I'm doing it myself (well, Tapestry of Grace comes pretty close, but I'm cheap).
