Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Big rabbit trail coming up this summer...the girls and I are taking the month of July and driving from CO to NY. We are planning stops at the Little House sites in
De Smet, SD
Walnut Grove, MN
Pepin, WI
Mansfield MO and
Independence KS

Besides re-reading all the Little House books and doing some online research, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas to make this trip even better?
Thanks!
Jennifer

This is so cool. My young kids love these books and I adored them growing up--still do, I guess. I'm not from the Midwest and I was so excited about getting to see some of these places when we moved to Minnesota. We went to Pepin in January and I hope we can get to Walnut Grove and De Smet this summer.

The homestead in DeSmet is the only one I've visited, but it was really fun. You can even camp out on the Ingalls' homestead or spend the night in a covered wagon. The actual homestead can keep you busy for a morning or afternoon, and some evenings the town puts on an open-air play -- I don't remember if it was the life of Laura or just what; we missed it.

The town, which felt so far away in the book, is right there with even some of the shops still doing business.

Jennifer,
What a neat, neat trip! And a treasured memory for your girls.

We've been to the house in Mansfield, MO and the LH on the prairie in KS.

We're heading back to MO this month for the national homeschool basketball tournament and the girls and I will take another trip to Mansfield.

Chelsea was a baby last time we went and Annie was literally the size of a penny.

Be sure to take notes and narrations and share it with all of us.

One thing I can share w/ you is the LH in Kansas isn't very much at all to look at. but they have an old schoolhouse and postoffice to tour while you're there. And you can see the well dug by Pa and my girls especially loved pretending they were on the very same Indian trail that Laura and Jack had stood on.

Standing on the prairie in back of the house, looking out to the horizon after a reading of LH is an experience in itself.

Have fun!

If you are coming all the way here to New York, don't miss the Almanzo Wilder childhood homestead in Malone. It's where Farmer Boy takes place.

Charles Ingalls was born and spent some of his childhood in Cuba, NY but unfortunately there is no "site" to visit as they are not sure exactly where the farm he was born on is. There are many descendants of Langford Ingalls still residing in the Cuba area.

Have fun!

We are also reading the little house books and I just found out we'll be traveling to MN this summer and maybe MO. How do I find directions to these Little House sites? That sounds like a great idea. Is there a website available?

Thanks,
Jody
