Thomas will be 7 in January and he loves all things knights. I am planning to get him some of these from Creative Brain -- they are really nice plastic knights. I'd also like to get him a book about the crusades -- this book from AmazonDK Crusades looks good but it's not available. Anyone have any suggestions for good kids' books about the Crusades -- I was thinking we could even do a unit.

Anothe thought I had was researching the history of Chess -- he loves playing (even beat my dh yesterday!) and I thought this would be a cool tie-in also.

Advice or comments, my wonderful resource

Books on the crusades for a 7 yo? That is a tough one as secular and protestant sources do not usually handle this well. Sources of stories - like Ivanhoe and King Arthur just wouldn't do for a 7 yo. The only thing I can think of is reading Bells of Conquest (about St. Bernard of Clairvaux) and Gentle Revolutionary (about St. Francis of Assisi). Both of these are Encounter Books by Daughters of St. Paul. They went out of print but have, I think, been reprinted and/or redone.

Thanks Janet -- I'll check those out. You'd think that with boys so interested in this era at this age, there would be more available, wouldn't you?

I grew up on these Encounter books. I just loved them. My favorite of all time was "Mary's Pilgrim" about St. Peregrine. They renamed it "Encounter the Saints" and changed the illustrations....I'm not sure if the text is the same. I'm noticing they now give author credit...the older versions just said by the Daughters of St. Paul. So does this mean they are rewritten, or they decided to put the sister's name on the book? Anyway...I digress!

I found Francis of Assisi (Gentle Revolutionary) from the Daughters' site, but I also found multiple copies of used and new on Bookfinder.com, starting under $5.00. HTH
