Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What are you going to do on Inauguration Day? Our plans are to watch it on TV, of course. I am also having the kids learn the meaning of the words to the Oath of Office as well as make a scrapbook page of our incoming president. We are going to try to go to Mass that day, too.

I'd love to hear ideas you may have planned!

Amanda Bennett has this Inauguration Unit. I have not purchased it, but it looks good. We will watch it on TV. Good idea about going to Mass, great way to remind our children to pray for our leaders and country.

I love the idea of learning the Oath of Office! I'm adding that one to our day. For inauguration day, we hope to do the following activities:

1.     I have several books about the different branches of government which we will be reading and then when we watch the inauguration on TV will be discussing the different people and which branch of government they represent (the justice administering the oath, the president, the different members of Congress, etc).

2. We will watch the parade with our US map so that when they show a marching band from a state we can find that state on our map.

3. I have a book on the US Capitol so we will talk about the Capitol building itself.

4. We will listen to some music by Aretha Franklin (always great to dance to!)

5. As we watch, I will be jotting down notes for additional rabbit trails for later on in the week ! It is always interesting to me to see what the kids think is interesting.

Get out of town.

Today one of my boys today was trying to list the Holy Days of obligation and came up with "Christmas, the Octave of Christmas, the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, and.....Inauguration Day." However, it was a good reminder to me that we should plan to go to mass.

We are having some families over to our home to pray the rosary for Life and our Country.

We will probably turn it on the tv--it only happens every four years after all--and pray real hard that foca doesn't become a reality. I might go out and buy a newspaper the following day so the oldest can read about it. I don't have any plans for a formal study of the inauguration but a look at the oath of office seems like a fine idea.

Thank you so much for the link glinNC!! I downloaded a copy this afternoon and am so excited. It is full of wonderful information and activities and even a copy of the Oath of Office. I went to the Washington Post site and printed off the parade route. We will be using that and the questions in the download for our map work.

My pleasure to share! I was excited, too, when it came in my inbox! It was an answer to my own question!

Some of it is too advance for my younger children, but it's definitely a keeper for the *next* election!

Have fun celebrating the historical day!

Presidential Inauguration Kit

This is a very interesting and free site for the inauguration

There is one file I really liked called a taste of the past: touring the White House Kitchen

Avoid turning on the TV, radio, or any other news source so as to keep my blood pressure at a civilized level--then blog like heck about the upcoming March for Life two days later, which some family members are lucky/crazy enough to be attending.

Sorry; just being truthful.

This is a cool "fly over" of the inaugural parade route that my husband's company has designed. It's really kind of neat.

Well, if all are healthy, we're going to spend the morning with a dear friend who just had a cuddly little girl ... and watch and pray and thank God we live in a country with such a drastic change in leadership that is smooth, non-combatant and celebrated somewhat by all sides ... many countries don't have such a smooth transition.

Or ... if any of us are flu-ish (and we don't want to carry anything to this dear peanut) ... we'll head to Mass at Rick's high school ... then spend the day talking and discussing the good, the bad and the ugly and especially FOCA and the March on Thursday.

I would be that friend and I'm going to take my cues from Bobby Jindal who said:
"The president deserves our support as Americans. In church, we pray for our president, whether we voted for him or not. I think we should look for opportunities to work across party lines with him. I also think as Americans we also have an obligation to stand on principle when we disagree. We should genuinely want him to succeed. Our country is facing not only an economic challenge, but also international threats. I want him to succeed and I want our country to thrive under his administration. Clearly I will have philosophical disagreements with him and his administration. He deserves a chance to hit the ground running. He hasn't proposed his first bill. Republicans make a mistake in Congress if they simply go there and say their mission in life is to say, 'no' to every proposal. I think we should look for opportunities to work with him. I also think we should be proactive if we don't agree with him and offer (alternative) solutions. It's not to filibuster what we don't like and protest on the House floor; we need solutions."

My husband will be locked down in his office since he works within the secure perimeter and will not be allowed to leave from noon today until Wednesday morning. My family lives in the shadow of DC. This "event" is huge here.Traffic is gridlocked since all major roads are closed. All soccer and ballet have been canceled because we simply cannot move.I can't ignore this event is happening. Instead, I choose to watch and pray and hope. And then, on Thursday, I'll send my big kids into that city to ensure that our voices are heard on behalf of the unborn.

Oh yeah ... even driving around today to and from Manasass was a bit spooky as very few were out (but lots of plows "in case" of snow!)

When you think about it, like any new president, Mr. Obama is really an unknown as much of what he has said over the last year or so is very much campaign rhetoric ... all we can do is pray and hope that all the changes are good for our country!

It's big news down under as well. I've been hearing about it on the hour for hours and hours... we'll remember your country in prayer.

We don't have any specific plans at all ~ we are actually spending most of our day preparing our oldest son for his trip to DC for the march on Thursday. I tend to feel a bit like Erin here - the coverage I have watched so far is enough to make me wretch. Don't get me wrong, I hope and pray for a lovely four years.

I did have the oldest two read a few articles online and we have shared some good discussion. Our minds and prayers keep coming back to the march on Thursday and to the impending arrival of this little one in my womb.
