Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Who was Pharaoh when Moses was a child? How about when he grew up and returned to Egypt to free his people? Who was Pharaoh when Joseph was sold into slavery and was the same Pharaoh the one who freed him from slavery to interpret his dreams? And what happened in between Joseph and Moses? The Bible is pretty sketchy on that since the story of the death of Jacob and Joseph succinctly wind up the book of Genesis and the story of Moses starts in the book of Exodus. Does Moses come directly from Joseph's line?

I apologize for my ignorance. Do you still think I teach my kids for *their* benefit? It's really so that I can learn!

Hi Tina,

Those are great questions! I'm totally with you - if someone asks "are the kids learning alot?" my reply is "I suppose so, but I know mom sure is!"

We're currently studying ancient history - both Hebrews & Egyptians so I can help you out just a little. Moses & Aaron were from the line of Levi, which makes perfect sense since they were assigned the priestly duties. Jesus was actually from the line of Judah (which, of course, is the same line as King David), hence the title "Lion of Judah." As a little aside, King Saul & St. Paul were from the line of Benjamin. Also Joseph's line was actually split into the two 1/2 tribes named after his sons, Ephraim & Manasseh.

Here are some of the resources that have been very helpful:

Old Testament Days - There is a great map of the Hebrew camp (p. 61) which shows all the tribes. We recently glued little paper tents onto a piece of cardboard & colored-coded them according to tribe. Then we attached a "cloud" which hangs above the tabernacle to signify God.

Children's Guide to the Bible - not Catholic but very helpful.

Also I'm listening to the audiotape of Our Father's Plan - it is amazing to learn what is in the Bible that most of us don't know about.

Another good resource is the videotape of The Great Adventure with Jeff Cavins.

Looking forward to more info on this time period!

Hi Tina,

After reading another thread on bibles & concordances I realized that I neglected to mention another favorite resource for bible study - The Bible for Young Catholics.

Hi again Tina,

An answer to one of your questions just crossed my path. It is believed that at the time of Moses the Pharoah was Ramses II. It came up in a video from the library that is based on David Macauley's book "Pyramid". I remember that Ramses II was the Pharoah in "The Ten Commandments" but I don't expect Hollywood to be historically accurate .

Check out the Wooly Lamb Publishing "History Links" volume on Ancient Egypt. It's a great resource for a relatively small price.

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for the great suggestion. We're just starting to use

History Links and the timeline at the beginning is very helpful.
