My 8-1/2, third grader is reading the book and working along in the ICS study guide put out by Memoria Press. He is able to understand both the stories and the study questions, but he is a very advanced reader. If you did the book as a read aloud, I think your kids could both understand it.

(Can you tell we are studying ancient Rome in our house this year as well??)
