I just ordered the teacher's guide for Connections with History volume 1. While I wait for the download link, I have a quick question.
It'd been a while since I looked at the RC History website, so it has changed a little. I'm confused on the Jeff Cavins bible study portion -- it looks like RC History is recommending the new teen version? First, what did you actually use for this and what were the pros & cons? For myself, cost is a major factor. I run our parish library, and I know we have the set of videotapes of the "Our Father's Plan" series done by Jeff Cavins & Scott Hahn. How is this different than the Great Adventure set which is different than the teen set? (grin) Can't I just use the Our Father's Plan videos?
Oh, and I'm thinking of doing a little mixing and matching with the Novel Inquiries literature guides by ordering them individually. I have a 12yos and 13yod. Which ones did your kids like the best? Thanks!

We used the older tapes that were recommended and not the teen version. I generally dislike teen versions of things, plus the expense. At the time, we could still could tapes instead of CD or DVD so it saved mega bucks.
My children have liked all the novels and literature, but when I have a chance, I'll ask them about their favorites.
Oh, e-mail Sonya. She was always very helpful when I had questions about how easily something would substitute.

Jen,
Like you, cost is a major factor when considering many materials that are suggested by certain curricula. Ultimately what I love about Sonya's CWH curricula is that you have the freedom to use, discard, or substitute what is suggested. Even the materials that are written in as "required" books for the assignments can be substituted with something else that is suitable for your family.
In our instance, I wound up using the online recordings of the programs for Our Father's Plan for my own background information (Old Testament history is NOT my forte!). The series follows a similar enough sequence (I think this might have come before Cavins' Bible study series???) that you shouldn't have too much of a problem aligning it with the proper units.
The nice part about these units, IMO, is that they're really more of a framework for you to work from. Yes, you can use them exactly as written, but you equally have the freedom to adapt. It's not like you're wasting paper and ink from pre-made lesson plans, since you'll be creating custom assignment sheets for each student anyway.
Can you tell I love CWH???

oh I used their book lists for putting together what books I wanted to use and I loved "Making Senses Out of Scripture" by Mark Shea for my own use.. the whole idea that the whole world was moving toward the advent of Christ.. and while the Bible tells one part of the story, you can see other peoples like in the greek/roman mythology how they long for God and how their human constructs are less satisfying over time.
