Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I got this recently to read myself as background for our American history. It IS good. The section on Columbus is very fair and I was very pleased with the information on missionaries and social justice issues (e.g., slavery of natives). Information on people like Fr. Kino is hard to find--this is a good resource for filling in the Catholic side of Conquest and expansion.

There is also a section for discussion of social issues and I think that is great--very important to get kids thinking about the Church's social teaching.

It's dry in some parts. I would not give it to anyone under jr high age, though you could present information to younger kids yourself.

Yes, I think you could read it with 4th graders and get they'd get a lot out of it through discussion and narration, etc.

Emmanuel books has it listed for grades 4-8, and they are usually pretty conservative in those estimates. So, I'm sure it would be fine if you were "doing it with" them.
