Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am not sure where this goes so move it if you need to...

I saw this article about the Swiss Guard swearing in ceremony and would love to find more information for my oldest son about the history of the Swiss Guard. Any ideas? Books, websites, etc...?

I checked the EWTN schedule to see if they were going to broadcast the ceremony but I couldn't find anything about it.

Also, I was kind of thinking this might be a neat rabbit trail maybe.

Not sure how helpful I'll be with resources, but talk of the Swiss Guard always makes me smile. After JPII died those movies about his life came out and Swiss Guards were shown in them, and we saw pictures of them in this JPII comic book (from 1982). So we had talked about them and my then 5 year old was intrigued by them as well. What was so funny was we later read another book (see below) that mentioned the Swiss Guard and I asked him before reading the name if he remembered what the Pope's guard was called. He did and piped up with, "The Cheese Guard." We thought is was so funny that he associated Swiss with cheese and that was what he remembered. We still refer to them as the Cheese Guard here .

Paul Gallico has a very sweet book called The Small Miracle about a little boy who tries to see the Pope to ask a favor in hopes of saving his ailing donkey. He has to get through the Guard (and several others) first. So Swiss Guard are in that book. There is a reprint and abridged edition of the book as well. That one is more like a picture book so has lots more illustrations. I do believe there is a picture of the Swiss Guard though I'm not recalling for certain.

The Vatican site has some information about and history of the Guard. It is pretty cool.

EDITED:Oh, and I'm moving it to Rabbit Trails - great idea for a rabbit trail.

I saw a documentary about the Vatican, and it had a fascinating segment about the Swiss Guard. I'll have to figure out which one it was.
Oh, yes, it was National Geographic:Inside the Vatican.

All of these sound fabulous! Now, I think some of the amazingly talented writers around here need to get on the stick and write a fabulous children's book about the Swiss Guard!

Lindsay, I didn't know Netflix had that movie!
Ewtn has this movie as well. Our kids loved it.

There is one scene in which a man is running to the shower with a towel. A little surprising for us.
