I found this site,Historical Movies, in a swirling black hole of a search for something completely unrelated. (Does that happen to anyone else, or is it just me?)

Anyway, I thought it might be of interest to people who have kids who learn best visually. I think it will be great for my oldest. I just scanned the listing of movies and not being a big movie buff wasn't familiar with many of the films. Is there anything here jumping out at you that we should avoid?

(obviously I'll look at ratings and read descriptions, but if you're familiar with anything that may have a troublesome perspective...)

Great site!

Since it includes novels, I was surprised to not see Ivanhoe on this list. I caught part of the movie yesterday with Elizabeth Taylor and Robert Taylor TCM (search for Ivanhoe). If you click on the link, there are several movie clips.

We have the Ivanhoe video. It has been well used! My boys have watched it a billion times, and my dd often joins them. They also like Robin Hood and it's neat that they can relate the two.
In regards to this site, though I haven't checked it out yet, I'm certainly going to. My dc love historical movies (even when they are in black and white). We watched The Red Badge of Courage last night which was on cable. Perfect timing as ds will be reading the book. I usually have them read the book first, then watch the movie and compare.
When I first started using CM I was afraid that movies were "not allowed". But really, I have found that when the child reads the book as well as watches the movie it helps them to get a deeper understanding of the plot. What's happened at times (and I just love!) is when they say something like "The movie was good but the book was better!" or "The movie didn't follow the book at all. The part about ___ wasn't even in it!" That tells me how much they are comprehending in their reading.
There's another site I have seen called Teaching With Movies (or something like that). I'll have to see if I can find it and post the address. On the site they say if the movie is worth viewing based on whether or not is it historically correct. They also have other resources...
I'm off to see if I can find it now.
