My daughter and I just finished Homeless Bird (wonderful book) and she is really wanting to dive in to India!

Do any of you have any book or activity suggestions??? I am thinking crafts, activities and books on Indian history (ancient to now) and good literature suggestions.

Kipling's tales and Demi's books on Mother Theresa and Gandi would be good. Karen

An older thread with a few suggestions - Books about India (in this link MacBeth links to her page where she has numerous suggestions)

I see you mentioned already going the Kipling route. Kipling suggestions? thread has some different angles which you might not have covered.

When Jen (rivendale) was getting ready to move to India for 6 months she started this thread. Scroll down for the suggestions from Kelly and Gwen (momwise).

Picture Books:
Baya, Baya, Lulla-by-a by Megan McDonald is the story of an Indian mother who is weaving a blanket for her baby while a baya bird is building her nest nearby and the interaction between the two. It's told in lyrical fashion interspersed with soothing sounds and Hindi words.

And I just found this one at the library yesterday.
My Dadima Wears a Sari. What a great intergenerational and cultural awareness book. It is the story of grandmother sharing the story of her saris with her granddaughters - it's about love and tradition. There is a helpful sari wrapping tutorial in the back. I'll bet your daughter would really love to wrap one.

This one is linked to it on Amazon and looks like it would go along well though I haven't seen it. Mama's Saris

ps I am always so amazed at the wonderful things my kids pick up from well written literature (and how little they take from the big grand overview, unless they are really interested

). As we looked at a geography book at India my dd kept mentioning the cities, dress, spices etc. mentioned in the book. It really puts everything in context! Yah for living books!!!

Just saw this picture book recommended on a blog. It's set in India at the time of the 2004 tsunami. Sounds interesting.

The following titles are recommended by Home School Favourites a Christian supplier here in Australia. You can read detailed reviews of the titles here.
I can't personally recommend any as I haven't read them.

The Royal Diaries; Jahanara (a little too old for your daughter)

The Little Brown Jay by Elizabeth Claire Picture Book

Daughter of the Mountains by Louise Rankin.

Amy Carmichael: Let the Little Children Come by Lois Hoadley Dick. (13 yrs+)

The Hidden Jewel by Dave and Neta Jackson

Gandhi Young Nation Builder by Kathleen Kudlinski

Mother Teresa: Friend of the Poor by Kathleen Kudlinski

Modern History:

My Story: Indian Mutiny by Pratima Mitchell
