Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Alice, could I ask you more about the Latin DVD's? We started with LC I, but just the books/CD's. Then we tried Jenney's, which we (ds-11 and I) both like but it's really a bit above ds'-s level. Also, b/c I work 2 days a week and dh is home with ds, but doesn't teach, i've been looking at video/audio for certain subjects for him to do on those days. I'm thinking of Rosetta Stone, after reading reviews of it compared to Power-Glide.
Are you using the LC DVD's or something else? If LC, how do they compare to just the CD?

Hi Karen,

We are using the Prima Latina DVDs and love them. They may be purchased from Memoria Press. I am not especially familiar with Latin, so it helps for me to learn right alongside the children. My favorite part is that I do not need to worry about mispronouncing anything!

Hi Karen,
I am not Alice but we did LC I last year without the DVDs but didn't finish.
This year I had my dd (11) do the lessons again that she had done
without the DVDs last year. Not the written exercises but only the DVDs.
It made a big difference in her understanding especially the declensions.
This year she pretty much did Latin by herself with the DVDs.
The DVDs have more explanations that the Teacher's Manual and the
explanations are clearer. The DVDs are not fancy but they have some
visual aids for memorization.
My dd liked to work with them but she got annoyed sometimes with the
gestures and tone of voice of the teacher.
HTH,
Natalia

Natalia,
My ds doesn't like the tone of voice of the teacher on the CD's, so I'm guessing the DVD's would be just as bad, or worse! That's what I'm afraid of and why I'm thinking of trying something like Rosetta Stone. I've read reviews of it (the programs in general, not just the latin) from several different places and they all seem positive. When I looked at curriculumreview, almost all the ones on Power-Glide were bad, even though from the website it had seemed pretty good. Anyone have experience with either of these in Latin specifically, or even another language? Rosetta Stone is SO expensive and I haven't seen it used anywhere, but I can use it for all 3 kids eventually, since I plan for all 3 to take at least some Latin.
I do have the demo and looked briefly at it; I guess I should spend more time with it and see.

I think the person who does the DVD is the same person who does the CDs. I just look at the CD to see if there was a name but there wasn't. The person who does the DVDs is Cheryl Lowe who is the author of the book. if she is the same that does the pronunciation guide then she sounds very different The person on the CD has a very nasal voice not so with the person who does the DVD.

Although the concept behind Power GLide is a good one, I can't think of anyone who has really liked it (though I'm sure there ARE devotees). I really WANTED to like it, but I have to say, I just don't. However, I've only looked at it for Spanish. My niece was using it in 10th grade, as part of a DIS at a school, and she hated it, didn't learn a thing. Later, she took an intensive class at a Jr. College, loved Spanish, and is now planning to major in it!

We have Rosetta stone, and it is good for pronounciation and there are folks who really like it, but it seems to me a little random, like it doesn't really build on itself. I think it would be very good for vocab building skills. If you have a very motivated student, of course, they will learn from anything!

How old are your children? If they are under 4th grade, you might look at "Our Roman Roots" as a fun introduction to Latin. It's sort of a "Latin Lite", you don't really learn lots of straight grammar, but you do learn some vocab, some familiarization with cases and what they are, pronounciation, sayings and prayers. It starts out learning to sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" in Latin, and moves on from there. It is not as scholarly as Latina Christiana, or Prima Latina, certainly not Henle or Wheelocks, but if your kids are younger, this might be a good option. A good in between step from, say, Rummy Roots, before you jump into a more scholarly study of Latin.

After lots of research i'm planning to use The Latin Road to English Grammar this next year for ds 12. He didn't care for LC I last year.

I do have 2 yrs of Latin from high school so I think it will help me, and from what i've read the LREG basically has the teacher do the lessons right along with the student, or ahead, really.

Does anyone have experience with the teaching DVD's for this? If I had no Latin myself, I'd get them in a minute, but at $89 if I don't need them I'd like to skip them. From my understanding, they aren't for the student, but for the teacher.

Hi Karen,

Hope I don't "muck" up the situation since it sounds like you've made a decision but I just wanted to add that I prefer Rosetta Stone for conversational languages since it uses the "immersion" method. We use it for Spanish & I can't say enough about it. It is expensive, however, it covers alot and is a top-notch program. Also, when we had trouble with 2 of our cds in the past, Rosetta Stone replaced them for free.

Since Latin is a totally different language, i.e. ancient & highly-inflected, I don't think Rosetta Stone would serve the same purpose. Or maybe it would be best to use it after having learned latin the more traditional way? I'd love to hear from someone who has used it for latin.

We've used LC I for 2 years (4th & 5th grade) as recommended by MODG. I thought we were doing well - until I borrowed the dvds from a friend. Wow!! What a difference that made! It's as if we have a personal tutor, which is really something considering the price. The person who does the dvds, btw, is Leigh Lowe. Cheryl Lowe, who wrote the program, did the cd. I definitely plan to purchase the dvds for LC II. I have also heard wonderful things about LREG (which my kids will use in 8th grade) but didn't know they have a dvd. Where can that be purchased?

If you need more info, I find the Memoria Press Link very helpful. Hope I've helped in some way !

Here is the LREG site which describes the DVD's
Latin Road to English grammar

I've also seen it in the Rainbow Resource catalog I think.
BTW, if you click on Free Sample (at the LREG site)they'll send you a nice little packet that describes the approach, and the first chapter of the program.
