Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am teaching a co-op class on this topic for 7-10 year olds. I've already compiled a list, but I'm definitely looking for ideas.

I'm also looking for craft ideas for many of the countries, provinces and states associated with the saints. (Hawai'i, Canada, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, etc.)

Thanks in advance!

This is a great idea, Nancy! I love the idea of learning geography with the saints. Several years ago I taught a countries/cultures class for our co-op and as part of it we included for each country studied a map, flag, music, game or craft, food, and a saint.

I remember you commenting, so I know you saw the list I compiled in another thread of the United States saints by state. Did you get a copy of the book I mentioned there - Saints of North America? It does included a list in the back of saints/blessed/venerable by country - which was very helpful. It is an interesting book which I do recommend for more info on the North American Saints.

In this thread Mare mentioned the 3 part cards she made for the Saints of the Americas. They are downloadable from her blog. She did a magnificent job.

Craft Ideas
Mexico - Mexican clay figures - great book about a well-known Mexican clay is Josefina by Jeanette Winter
There are several companies that make a red (Mexican style) air dry clay that you could use to have the kids make clay figures one week and paint another. Comment about Josefina Aguilar, her figures seem fine and many are religious but don't go pursuing the figures made by her grown children - many are risque.

Oaxacan wood carving - a fun book about the creator of this particular art form is Dream Carver by Jeanette Winter
You could get unfinished wood pieces in animal shapes (I'm thinking flat ones since they are readily available at the craft stores) and have the class paint them in the colorful style of the Oaxacan carvers.

Tin work is a very common art form of the American southwest and Mexico. We have done various crafts with both craft aluminum (looks like tin) and poster board that is coated with a shiny tin looking material. You could make decorated frames for pictures of the saints or votive candle sleeves that look tin punched. I have pictures of our projects that I have meant to post on my blog (I currently have blog-a-phobia too many ideas, no follow through)

Peru - Arpilleras are three dimensional textile pictures from the Andes region (Peru and Chile). The book Tonight is Carnaval is illustrated with arpilleras. You could do this as a craft. Instead of actually sewing I would recommend gluing fabric pieces on posterboard. Could be done small scale by individuals or on larger paper as a group mural.

I have more ideas but no more time right now.

Hawaiian crafts
Paper Leis
This idea is from Family Fun magazine. Trim the tops of colorful cupcake liners to resemble scalloped-edged flowers. Then cut a bunch of drinking straws into 1-inch lengths for spacers. Using a wide-eyed embroidery needle and twine, alternately sew through the centers of a bunch of flowers and string on straw sections. When the strand is long enough, tie together the string ends, and the lei is ready to wear. You could also cut the flowers out of fun foam or tissue paper.

Canadian crafts
We need the Canadian members to jump in here with some distinctly Canadian crafts or folk arts. In general I think it must be similar to the US and be regional. I'm figuring your saints are ones who were ministering to the Native people. It would be good to pick some craft associated with the northern tribes. There are some great books out there with Native crafts.

As I mentioned we did some games as part of our culture/geography study.
Hawaii - Ulu maika
Mexico, Columbia - Balero
