We are doing a unit on geography at present, looking at different countries, and I thought a salt dough map would be useful to help the children remember the features of a country.

I have found a reciepe for salt dough. But what I don't quite understand is how you are meant to do the maps. Am I correct in understanding you photocopy a map of a country and then put the dough on this? How does this work?

Hi Erin,

We're going to be doing a sheet cake map of our state later this fall. Salt dought should be fun. I've always seen them done as an outline drawing on a board or posterboard. I would think the children should use a detailed atlas as a reference and then fill in the physical features. Of course they could do it to scale depending on their ages; it would just involve a bit of figuring.

When we did this, ds looked at an atlas but freehanded the shape (of Africa). We rolled the dough out and ds used a butter knife to shape it. Worked well.

So what I do is get the children to fill in the map with the dough? Do we leave it flat? And then for the rivers etc would we use paint?

I thought that this sample picture of salt-dough map gives a pretty good example of a typical map. I have always made a slight depression for the rivers and lakes to show that they would typically be below the level of the land and made thicker dough and peaks for the higher elevations and mountains. Then when the map is dry, yes, the different land form/elevations are painted to show the differentiation.   Hope this helps.

Mary,
I now have an idea how to go about it. I'm feeling confident enough to work it out.
Thank you very much.

What's the best recipe -- all you experts -- for salt dough or other dough that holds up well (and is relatively easy to use ) for these 3-d maps?

Any advice or resources would be much appreciated!

Blessings
