Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

One of my all time favorites is Esther Averill's (sp?) book about Cartier's exploration of Canada. He used the saint of the day to help him name his new discoveries.

Last winter we read A Passion for Danger by Francine Jacobs, a biography about the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen. (He walked/ski'd/sledded across the center of Greenland and made an attempt for the North Pole.) After reading this biography, I found original work by Nansen: The First Crossing of Greenland and Farthest North.

We began The First Crossing but didn't finish it.

I read these as read alouds, I'm not sure of age range for independent reading.

For high school age we love all of the Bill Bryson travel books. The one about Australia in particular just kills me!

My favs have been the Holling C. Holling books. We used the Beautiful Feet and maps that coordinate with the series of H.C.H books. I'd say it was between 4th and up grade level. It would depend on your child and his/her level of maturity and focus. The books themselves are extraordinary, making awesome read-alouds. Add the Beautiful Feet guides and you have an entire geography/history/art/literature curriculum! Most of his books cover North American geography, with the exception of Seabird, which takes you all over the globe.

Richard Halliburton books! My kids (and I) just love these old books. Halliburton was the adventurous Bill Bryson of his day (pre-WWII). The books are very entertaining. Though OOP (naturally) you can pick up old copies for very little-just punch in Richard Halliburton. One of the titles that we particularly enjoyed was "The Book of Marvels". I'd say my kids started reading these around age 12 (but my dh and I enjoy them now :-)
