In an earlier post Mary referred to this book. I just began reading it to my 4 children who are waking up extremely early begging me to read the next chapter. This book was due back at the library on the 1st. I was hoping to renew it and it was on the reserve list.... Is it a sin to keep the book and just pay the fine and hope the people on hold find another copy    ? The Librarian told me to just return it when we finished it and pay the fine. I took her word for it. She is the ruler of the library... Right
Anyway, My children have just really gotten into this story and I would love to hear what you all are doing as far as teachable moments etc..

Oh, Anne, I'm so glad you and your kids are enjoying this one ... I was so excited, especially since I'd gotten it for a $1 at a used book sale!
It is a great way to teach geography, history and wonder! Have fun and ENJOY!

We're reading it and enjoying it so far. It is going very well with the secular Advent calendar I bought at the convenience store.

We listened to it on tape last year during Advent and are again this year. It is a wonderful, fun, story. It is becoming our family tradition to listen to it in the car during this time of year.

It seems to me that many librarians have a way of . . . being this way! No offense please as I am interested in someday working for the library PT myself! Just that I've had some similar encounters where the exact rules are very, very important, and I guess I'm more of a flexible-natured person!
But I do think you can find it quite inexpensively used (though you'd have to wait on shipping!), and my local used bookstore has 2 copies which I am coveting, for about $4 each. Maybe you should just buy it, as they might want it again next year anyway!
