Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm not sure which book I want to get to read to cover the time of George Washington. I really don't want to read two lengthy books especially since we usually read them kind of slow.
I'm looking at two books in particular, but am open to other suggestions.
George Washington's World
or
George v. George

I want something that gives the general feel for who Washington was, but also gives a good feel for what was happening in the states.

Has anyone read either of these?

Hi Julia,
I haven't read either of those but my ds10 read two books on George Washington this year that he liked:
Meet George Washington by Joan Heilbroner, a Landmark book. This is 67 pages and very well done. My ds enjoyed it alot. He also read George Washington's Socks by Elvira Woodruff, this is a scholastic book about a group of boys who form a history adventure club and go back in time to meet George Washington. He read this after the Landmark book on GW.

Julia,
George Washington's World is a BIG book--350 pgs. Maybe you already know--it's actually a unit study which covers all of Western(?) history at the "moment" of the Rev. war. It would definitely be too much for anyone under 10 and I wonder if 12 wdn't be better.

George vs. George I have not seen, except looking at it on Amazon. However, it is only 64 pages. Much more doable if you want to have time for lots of other American history.

Another option--
The DAulaire GW book is gorgeous and my kids love it. It's a very nice biography and about the same length and George vs. George.

CK,
I actually didn't know that it was a unit study so that kind of cinches it for that book. I really didn't want to get anything too heavy.

Susan Marie,
Now that you mention it I think I have the Heilbroner book somewhere ...hmmm.

My thought is to do a biography of just George Washington (either the D'Aulaire's or the Heilbroner) and then do the George vs. George. I think by the time I'm done doing that I will have covered most of the highlights of the time in America. I'll probably have him read some historical fiction alone just to flesh it out a little more and give him something more fun to do.

Thanks ladies. It was good to hear from others what they liked and really good not to waste my money on a book that we probably wouldn't do right now.
