Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Ladies,

We collect postcards from all over the world as our way to learn geography.

In our playroom, we have a map of the world on the wall, with all of the postcards that we have collected surrounding it - the wall is almost full!

I'd have ideas to market some games...I wish I had a way to market time....

Happy Tuesday,

I feel silly responding to my own post...but I should have mentioned...

We starting collecting the postcards when my oldest was 5...she would return a postcard to the sender...it was in this way that she began learning how to write and has now branched out with pen-pals....not to mention - she LOVES maps and learning geography!

Anyway, should've added that in the first post...

our NG world map on the wall is one of the best investments we've ever made -- we've had it for about 6 months, and without having any formal geography program to follow the kids have learned so much! the only 2 places they've been in are italy and canada, so they know those by heart, but everytime we read something now, even without prompting, they start to look for places on the map. the other day i *caught* my 8-yo "copying" the map, using his own abbreviations. he didn't finish but 1/3 of it, but i was just so pleased that geography is painless around here. they've even made up "I Spy" games using the map. i've been planning forever to get some of the newfangled geography programs/software but now it looks like the map should suffice for a while.

i think the postcard idea would dovetail nicely with the map -- how do you collect postcards? when i was little i had an aunt who was single and who traveled extensively, so everywhere she went she'd send me a postcard. i'd love for my kids to have penpals all over the world but i don't think they'll be interested in writing to a bunch of people on a regular basis...

hmmm.... i'll try to find a postcard exchange site and post here again.

God bless,

stef in pa

Hi-

I copied an idea I heard (on LA I think) and put our big world map (that's mounted on foam board) in the kitchen. I have started labeling places we know..

Where Baba live
Where Luke Westenburg lives :) (Our Aussie visitor!)
Where the Tsunami struck
Where Iraq is
Where we are...
etc.

It helps us SEE the things know from life.

Maria, your postcard idea is great and would fit in nicely!
p.s. I reply to my own posts all the time. I also talk to myself a lot.
