What an excellent idea! I would start with my own state. Of course, that could lead to many interesting rabbit trails and then who knows if we would finish our original lapbook??

I saw a ton of patriotic and flag stickers at the teacher's store the other day. I bet after Labor Day there will be many items on sale at craft and hobby stores.

We googled some really nice maps the other day.

It will be interesting to see what others have to say.

Enchanted Learning (above) has a GREAT section to use for US Geography lapbooks.

You could also keep a list in your car during the year, and look for license plates of all of the different states, and try to see how many different license plates of different states you can see throughout the schoolyear as a neat activity.
