I realized recently that I should/must do the early church/apostolic times before just racing to the Middle Ages. We're using the Acts of the Apostles as our main source, but I was wondering if anyone has done anything with this time period for elementary school kids.

I had the Middle Ages lined up, but I honestly feel that I shouldn't skip the Early Church! It's too exciting and ties into our previous Ancient Rome study. Plus, the Acts of the Apostle would really be cool for them. Paul's adventures alone make for an awesome unit study!

Good stuff from RC History on this time period- as well as History Links.

Don't miss all the great martyrs! With All Saints Day coming, you'll find lots of ideas for (gory) costumes. St. Sebastian? St. Lawrence? Polycarp?

 Peace,
 Macmom

Connecting With History, Volume 2 is what Macmom is referring to. I gave a brief review of the first unit of volume 2 here.

The nice part is, the units are downloadable and absolutely full of great ideas. The ones currently available will take you all the way up through the Fall of Rome. Core readings are from the Marigold Hunt books for younger students, and Facts on Acts of the Apostles by Fr. Shamon as well as the Bible for older students.

Well, the volumes are available via download, so there is a considerable price break since you are paying for the printing and shipping. Volume 1 can be downloaded complete for $15, or you can purchase the hard copy for $25 (3-hole punched and shrink-wrapped).

Volume 2 is currently incomplete, so it is being offered on a unit by unit download basis, at $5 per unit. Five units are available right now, with two others to be expected. I'm guessing once everything is completed, they will offer a decent price break like w/Volume 1. So, for the time period between 63 BC and 500 AD, it would cost $25. Not a bad deal, really, since Sonya has done much of the thinking for you already.

I suppose RCHistory can get expensive when you don't have the core books that are recommended for the units. I primarily chose it because I already did have some of the resources. I got a bit hung up at first on having everything she suggested and doing it ALL, but I've since relaxed and feel free to subsitute or eliminate some thing altogether.

I checked out the booklist at RC and got some great ideas but does anyone have any other suggestions for early church? If I go by Our Father's House timeline I am looking up to 313AD.

The books I've come up with so far include: ( I apologise for not linking but I've included authors)
 For The Temple- GA Henty
Beric the Briton - GA Henty
Beyond the Desert Gate - Mary Ray
 Ides of April- Mary Ray
The First Christians - Marigold Hunt
 The Bronze Bow- Elizabeth Speare
 The Silver Branch- Rosemary Sutcliffe
The Eagle of the NInth - Rosemary Sutcliffe
 The Lantern Bearers- Rosemary Sutcliffe
 The Outcast - Rosemary Sutcliffe
The Restless Flame- Louis de Wohl
The Spear - Louis de Wohl
Fabiola - Cardinal Wiseman (This is very expensive, is it worth it? I do have an oop book by Wiseman called ' Fabiola's Sisters)
City of the Golden House - Madeline Polland
Between the Forest and the Hills - Ann Lawrence
Galen and the Gateway to Medicine - Jeanne Bendick
 Ben Hur - Lew Wallace
St. Paul the Apostle- Mary Fabyan Windeatt

 For the younger ones:
 St Valentine - Robert Sabuda
 St Christopher -Tomie de Paola

Dd 14 has already read most of these books I would really appreciate any other recommendations.

I also came across these titles from a Veritas Press catalogue, now I know they are not Catholic so I am leary and was wondering if anyone else has read these books.
Polycarp the Crown of Fire by William Chad Newsom
Peril and Peace: Vol 1 Chronicles of the Ancient Church by Mindy and Brandon Withrow
Against the World : The Odyssey of Athanasius by Henry Coray
 Quintus by R Weerstand

 Hoping for some great titles.
