Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sorry 'bout that--I fixed it so it actually links!

In the activities pdf there are some good maps, map activities (like comparing Antarctica's size with that of the US or Europe), penguin pictures, flags, the race to the South Pole (not lots, but something), "rock core" activities. . . . And this isn't the entire project booklet.

Thank you Celeste, this looks great!! I don't have much for Anarctica yet so this will be a great addition to my Continent boxes!!

Thanks for fixing the link too, they can be tricky sometimes!

If you have older children (4th and up) I would recommend Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World: The Extraordinary True Story of Shackleton and the Endurance by Jennifer Armstrong. We listened to this as a book on tape a few years ago and it was wonderful. "When their ship, Endurance, became icebound in Antarctica and sank in 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his 27 crewmen were 100 miles from land. Unbelievably, they all survived." Survived for two Antarctic winters when the rest of the world believed them dead. No rescue was enroute and WWI was ongoing. I am still astounded by this story. A great read or listen! The book also contains actual photos of the trip!

There is also a wonderful movie called "Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure, The greatest survival story of all time". It is one of our absolute favorites.

Not too terribly long ago, I got to visit the ice core lab at our local university with a geologist friend of mine...who brought along another friend, the gal who wrote the book "Endurance", Caroline Alexander. It was absolutely fascinating talking to her about this amazing survival story. She told me that the jackets the men had were the rough equivalent of a lined windbreaker today...truly mindboggling that they survived, and a real credit to Shackleton's leadership skills.

She also said that when the group finally found their way back home---in the midst of war---they were racked with guilt that they had been "safe" in the Antarctic while their friends back home were risking their lives on the front lines. Almost to a man, they immediately enlisted (tho some were turned down because of health disabilities that resulted from their "safe" time in the Antarctic!) and a number were subsequently killed in the war.

I second Kristee's movie recommendation, too---a great flick.

Kelly, I've just found "Endurance" by Caroline Alexander, I can't put it down! It was a perfect read to begin during our cold snap last week.

All sorts of Rabbit Trails are tempting me, I have family members and friends (divers - brrrr!) down there currently and in the past too.

I'll have to check out that movie next!
