Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Elizabeth does your county library system have them? Ours has only VA. We travel to your county weekly for speech therapy...it may be worth me stopping by a library out there too???

I can't believe how amazing those unit studies for the books are! Woohoo!!!!

I saw the books in your sidebar last week, and thought "How clever!" to tie them in with MNF. I love those books and use them and the lesson plans for lots of units.

I'll check on the library later Kacky. I've purchased them slowly throughout the year so that I was sure that I'd have the right book on the right week.

The unit studies vary in quality. They are not all written by them same person. Still, even the the worst scenario, it's a start.

What a great idea- and a great example of how you've taken an opportunity and made the most of it.

I love those State books - I cannot find many in either the Fairfax or Loudon library systems. I am looking at them longingly on my Amazon wishlist - but my budget is well over its limits

Prince William only has the Virginia copy and nothing more. Stinks! They have a ton of other ABC books...I wonder how well libraries take requests. You know...I think I have spent enough fine money there I should be allowed a request or two Yeah...probably NOT!

I wish the books were available in paperback. They do make really good reference books. I agree, though, that they are outrageously expensive. You could do the same idea with other states picture books. What does the library's stash of states books look like in general? Can someone suggest other resources for the same idea?

Kacky, I would request. I find librarians very open to requests and these books are generally well regarded.

I don't know any other state book suggestions, but... Kacky, I'll request them too. Our little poststage-stamp-sized library ladies are very nice to me and my gang. And BTW -- we have New Hampshire. A couple of years ago I found it for $1 and thought it was cool. Hmm... no team there.

So everyone knows...Maryan meant the library is postage-stamp size, not the ladies!!! We have the same size library out here too.

We have definitely pulled out a bunch of state picture books...but there isn't anything, that I have found, that is as comprehensive as this series. The best part of this series (there are lots of great parts!)is the great info for older kiddos. I love that one book can do it all for you!

Well Maryan let's do our requesting, you from your side of the county, me from my side and we'll see what happens!!

We have some of these ABC books in paper back, but not any of the state ones. Do those only come in hardback or are the paperback harder to find? We picked ours up when Barnes and Noble had them on sale... buy 2 get the third free. At the time, I didn't think to get the state books.

I don't see any paperback on the amazon pages...at least I didn't last time I checked.

We have been using the following books from the Library:

- Rookie Read About Geography books for each state - we have read Maine (Cynthia Walker), Massachusetts (Sarah de Capua) and New Hampshire (Simone Ribke) - they are a very easy reading level and are geared to younger kids reading themselves
- Don't know much about the 50 States - Kenneth C. Davis - has some interesting facts about each state
- The United States of America - A State by State guide - by Millie Miller and Cyndi Nelson - a really nice book to use for mapwork and sketching - my kids are making notebooks where they have maps and are sketching state trees, birds and flowers and I love the maps and illustrations in this book
- Celebrate the 50 states - Loreen Leedy
- The United States cookbook

They had some other State by State series at the library that I did not care for - not appealing to children.

Here is a 50 states literature list I found online:

I think I had found a while ago in Cay's yahoo group's files (sorry for the roundabout ) a couple of different lists for State Reading. I cleaned up my yahoo groups and I think I deleted myself out of that one...so I don't know how to link over for it...or something like that...someone else might be help out on that one!

Marilyn that site looks great too! Thanks!
