Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are going to be studying the Ancients this year using SOW and CHOW as our spines. I am having a hard time deciphering which Usborne resources to use with them. My children are 7,9&12.
I am thinking that the one about the Egyptians is more information packed than the Encyclopedia of the Ancient World.
I am confused and need someone to hold my hand through making these choices. Any help would be appreciated!

Well, I know that the SOTW activity guide suggests using either the Usborne Ancient World, Usborne Internet Linked Encyclopedia of World History, or Kingfisher World History as references (Kingfisher is suggested for logic stage students). I believe that the stories in SOTW Volume 1 may actually follow the same pattern as the Usborne books, and I'm pretty sure that the section in the Usborne World History book for the Ancients contains the same info as the their Ancient World book.

That said, Usborne also has a bunch of ancient culture-specific books for the, like the one on the Egyptians you mentioned and they are, on the whole, a lot meatier than the more general Encyclopedias. So, what you need to ask yourself is, do you want or need the more in-depth study of each culture? Or do you intend to give a more broad overview of the ancients. Personally, I like the Usborne IL Encyclopedia of World History as a good general reference book. It seems to appeal to my wide age range of children (3-13).

I've only invested in the Usborne book on The Greeks, and I do like how much more information is contained in it. We haven't used it yet, but it's nice to know it's there if my oldest wishes to delve a little deeper than the Encyclopedia.

Hope this helps a little.

Valerie

We love the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia suggested by Bauer for SOTW.
I catch the kids quite often perusing through while relaxing on the sofa:)
I was reading about King Henry VIII on my own and looked up information for myself.

At the back of the book are chronilogical lists that I find handy, like a list of all the popes, a list of Chinese emperors, kings of Scotland, England, US presidents, etc.

We actually have the Usborne Book of the Ancient World which is a compilation of three shorter books (Early Civilization, Greeks, Romans). It looks like it contains more info than the Usborne Encyclopedia of Ancient History, but it is an older text and doesn't appear to be current on the Usborne sites.
