Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have friends with grandparents who speak another language. Often, they speak that language when they do not want the children or grandchildren to know what they are talking about. Because the grandchildren were not brought up to speak the language (a sad thing), they are really left out of the conversation.

Today, Don's nephew returned from visiting his family in Liechtenstein. He called Trip, and the two of them had a long conversation...completely in German. I have no idea what they were saying, .

Does anyone else have kids who speak a language that you do not understand? Is this a problem, or a blessing? Personally, while I am delighted that Trip is becoming fluent in German (my kids take classes, and German is not spoken in the house), I felt a little left out .

Well, I don't know about *speaking*, but my two eldest are 'way ahead of Mom in their general knowledge of Latin. It irks me to no end Still, I take solace in the knowledge that I can still out-maneuver them in spoken Latin by virtue of having put in many years worth of Romance languages! But I know the day will come---soon--- when they'll surpass me in spoken Latin, too. That's the day I go back to studying something obscure and non-Latin based. Urdu, maybe? Esperanto? Even tho I expect, even HOPE that my kids will surpass me in their skills, I still like to keep an ace in the pocket, you know?

In our house, it's sign language !!! My two oldest girls spend quite a bit of time talking to each other with their hands .....and even though I know the alphabet they are much too quick for me to keep up and know what they are saying .

I think it's a blessing. It's something that they share together.
