Awhile ago people were discussing Lone Pine, RC, Memoria as options for online Latin classes. Did anyone make a decision?

We tried Our Lady of Perpetual Help. It was very reasonable and thorough, but for us (5th grade at the time) it moved to fast and was too difficult for a beginner course. But, depending on the age of your student, you might consider it. Even though it didn't work for us, *I* really liked the way it was set up and would consider it again in the future.

My daughter learned quite a bit in the online Memoria Logic class she took last year--so much in fact, I am considering the Latin for this year.

My 7th grader is signed up for LC II with Memoria Press & my 8th grader is signed up for Henle I (units I & II). Next year I'm planning to let this same 8th grader make the choice between continuing Henle with Memoria Press, Regina Coeli or switching over to Lone Pine.

We signed up 3 of our children with Lone Pine. We are really excited! Our 6th grader is taking the elementary course and our 8th and 10th graders are taking the high school course.

Lone Pine Classical School - Online classes
I registered my 9th grader for Latin 100 yesterday. I'm glad to see your kids will be in the class with her, Marianne. This thread came at a good time for me, because I was wondering what to do about Latin. The Memoria HS Henle I is already full, I didn't want the intensity of the RC or SO classes for Latin, and I don't think we'd have much success on our own. The instructor at Lone Pine is very enthusiastic and uses a fresh approach. Her website certainly makes the course seem fabulous. We'll see.
In case anyone is thinking about signing up...the instructor told me that my dd took the last spot in the class. (Sorry!) But she also said that she will make a waiting list of prospective students. Those on the list can observe during the two-week trial period, and if any registered students drop out, she'll fill their places from the list. Latin 100 starts Aug 21.
When I registered her, I thought the tuition of $195 covered a full year. I was quite disappointed last night when I realized that this is the cost of one semester. Ouch. But it does include the book and CD and an optional help session each week. And if she learns Latin and actually enjoys learning Latin, then I guess it will be worth it. At least we only have to pay for a semester at a time. If we really don't like it during the 2 week trial, we can drop out and all that we lose is $25. If the tuition is a real issue for you, email her. There is financial assistance available and there are sibling discounts.
One more thing...if you do decide to register and give her the name of the person that referred you (say, Marianne or...me  ), that person receives a $25 referral discount. I didn't know about that when I registered or I would have given someone here the referral credit.

Oh! I didn't know about the $25 referral! (Three families in our area are taking the class!) Henle on our own last year moved so slowly that I think it will totally be worth the $195 per semester! Having an experienced teacher teach the class will free me up for the things I really love like gathering time and read alouds! I still really love the Henle book and hope to have the kids translate it in the future to catholicize our latin.
I've also been really interested in the Memoria online courses so it is good to hear your positive input, Alice. I hope to use some of those courses in the future.
I just want to thank Elizleone for starting the Lone
Pine Classical thread. I've looked over the material and I'm so excited. It is just what I thought latin class should be. Not 5 declensions in one year, but 3. It is much more doable and I love how she stays with the being verbs for a while to get the nominative case down.
In my high school, french was taught in a similar manner and I loved it and it felt a lot easier than other french courses!
I'm excited too about you daughter being in class with Andre and Alex, Diane.

That's great news Diane! We're considering Lone Pine for next year.
So far both the Henle I & LC II classes with Memoria Press are going VERY well. The online quizzes are both fun & motivating. It's been great for my exclusively homeschooled boys to be exposed to a "class" even if it's only in chat form. The chats are not required by MP but they're very beneficial so my boys don't miss them. It's been great for them to have a teacher who knows Latin, unlike yours truly...

Wonderful, Diane!
Our kids are loving Lone Pine Latin 100 and Stellae courses too. My most reluctant latin student of last year just told me yesterday, "Mom, you know, I really like latin." That is HUGE for him!!!
I highly recommend the latin 100 because the teacher is SO helpful. She will answer questions anytime of day via internet.

Thanks, Brenda. I re-checked that info and it all looks good, but we, unfortunately, need a course of studies that is not tied to a specific timeline...i.e. ds could start it now and go as fast (or slow) as he liked. We can do that, on our own using Henle or Wheelock (tho an online class that didn't have a set time schedule would be great) , but in the absence of that, I'm still checking around for a different text. My ds really dislikes Henle, but it's what he knows and we'll stick with it if needs be.

You might want to sign up with the LCC Yahoo Group as the moms over there are up on all the Latin curriculums. I think there's a comparison chart in the Files section.

So, now that we are into the second semester......how are all of the online classes going? We might need to do this next year.
Is it easy to keep up? How often do the kids "meet" onine for class...........and, is it always at a specific time?

I didn't see this thread the first time around but I signed up my dd, 12, for LC I at Memoria this past fall and she has really enjoyed it. It is pricey and you pay by semester, but dd is really able to do all the lesson work on her own and is progressing well. Finally, she can learn Latin without having to wait for me to "catch up" and help her along... She also says she really likes the "chats." You meet online once a week and play games and interact with other students. You take quizzes and tests online, too, but the chats are a fun way to "meet" the other students.
I am signing her up for LC 2 in the fall and may try adding another Memoria course as well...

We've been very pleased with Henle 1. My ds really likes his teacher, Mr. Moore. There are 2 online chat sessions/week. They are not required but they're very helpful. They typically have "contests" and my ds enjoys the competition. There's also a small social component and my ds likes "meeting" other Latin students from around the country.
Just fyi - I made the mistake of not checking on my ds's work as I just "assumed" he would be on top of things but he didn't do all the quizzes so he received an incomplete grade last semester. If you're signed up with Memoria Press & want a grade, make sure your child takes all the quizzes & also print out the grades so that you have documentation in case there is a dispute.
