Hi all! I'm new to this board - I'm Linda, from Australia, and I have 8 children, whom I homeschool. We also run a homeschooling business here - so life is busy!
History is always one subject that, she we say, has been our 'problem area'. We used Story of the World, book 1, and LOVED it - got to book 2, still loved it, but I began to think more along the lines of presenting history from a Catholic point-of-view - seeing's how the Church became so important and influencial in the Middle Ages.
So, I'm looking at the various history choices - RC History was mentioned to me, but it seems to have heaps of preparation time needed, lessons planning, etc. - with the limited time that I have, I just don't see it working with us (correct me if I'm wrong, someone!).
Then, I came across the ABCs of Christian Culture. Now this looks a bit more 'useable', with daily lessons laid out, etc., but yet still uses 'real books'. Does anyone else know of this program, or even better, use it? Apparently it comes with lamenated history cards, a map cd and more, so it sounds very interesting.
After homeschooling for ten years, I feel I should have this all figured out by now - but I seem to be going through a 'mid-homeschool' crisis at the moment!

Hi Linda,
I think I go through that "mid-homeschool" crisis every year  I have used and am on my second go 'round with ABC's level A. We have really enjoyed it. Initially, I was using it with 5th-8th grades. Now, I'm up to 7th-10th. The introduction tape(now CD) really puts history and geography in perspective. I think there is something there for all levels. She divides resources and assignments for younger and older students. I like the "Fact Sheets" for each period and the way each period is broken down: When, Where, Who, etc. The maps are excellent, but we don't do the map tests. Maps are traced and added to notebooks. We have modified the timelines, somewhat. I don't like using calculator tape/paper -- its hard to put in notebooks. We also add pictures. In the end, we end up with a really nice history notebook.

Thankyou, Suzanne! How long did it take to go through the programme?
Do you think I can include the younger ones in on the lessons as well, or would I be best to use a separate programme for them?
I've ordered it, so here's hoping it's what I am expecting, and looking for!

Hi Linda,
Each time, we have made it through the "Four Ancient Cultures" the first year and then the "Six Ages of the Church" the second year. We do history three days a week. Sometimes, we can do more than one lesson a day and other times, one lesson may take a week (or more!)I think it is an extremely adaptable program, up or down

There are so many wonderful things to use. Our middle child is using Trisms for high school, which he also used their first manual, *History Makers* in 6th and 7th grades.
Our daughter decided she wanted use it for 7th and 8th, then we'll see about continuing at that point or not for her. I wanted to do world AND American history this year at the same time, as per Mater Amabilis way. I hope it works out.
Trisms is chronological, and is history, research and literature based, and fits our second son especially well. He knows SO much about Ancient History now after last year, and asked to read *The Iliad* and *The Odyssey* over the summer for fun. I like any curriculum that can do THAT!

Hi all. I just wanted to say that I have now received the 'ABCs of Christian Culture' - and it is exactly what I'd hoped!
In fact, it is so much more - it's been one of those times where you make a purchase, and instantly click with the authors ideas, presentation, etc. Not only does it use real books, but it is laid out, day by day, and yet, extrememly flexible. It also incorporates a lot of Montessori ideas - hands-on activities, which are excellent!
My plan is to finish up what we're doing now, and begin this programme in January - so, now I just have to wait. 
After months of researching history, it's wonderful to be able to take a deep breath, and know I've found what I was looking for.

Thnaks for that Linda.
When you say hands on, is it easy hands on or will you have to run around town finding all the things for the activities.
I too like the sound of this prog. but I know that when it comes to crafts etc, I fall short of the mark. I'm more of a hands-off homeschooler unfort.
I would like to write more, but the 3 yr old isn't impressed
