Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Even though I decided I want to do alot of living books for American History with my kids who are going into 5th, 2nd and k I still would like a text book to follow along. But so far I haven't seen anything I like among the Catholic text books. Any suggestions?

I really like the book The American Story by Jennifer Armstrong. It is not actually a textbook, but it makes a wonderful spine for American history. We started it late last year as a read-aloud and will continue using it this year. Both of my kids (6th and k last year) loved it.

Catholic Heritage Curriculum sells one of our favorites (certainly mine!), From Sea to Shining Sea. It is part of the Catholic Textbook Project. There is one other, All Ye Lands, more world history. But I think they heard they're working on more.

Could I ask you what do you like about From Sea to Shining Sea? I just read a sample page and it looked a little boring. Am I wrong.

Thank you for your info.

Here's what I've finally decided to do.

My only frustration is printing off a chapter at a time because we don't like to read off the computer.

My 12yold dd didn't like From Sea to Shining Sea that much. However, she really doesn't like any textbook we ever look at (hence...why twaddle-free books are so great!). But I'm a big history buff, I liked it, but I tend to like a lot of non-fiction textbooky-referencey things more than most. It has great sidebar-type boxes with interesting items (or at least I thought).

We used it as a spine book, and supplemented with a lot of other biographies and historical fiction.

Probably doesn't help much

I'm using CHC's book as a spine next year tooalong with lots of other books and notebooking activities. I've printed a library bibliography to go with each lesson topic and decided on a picture book for the littler ones to go with each. I've planned the first ten lessons so far. I'll try to post the plans on my blog tonight and you can have a look if you like.

We used Sea to Shining Sea this past year as a spine for my 8th grader, even though the reading level is a bit lower, and supplemented with lots of living books.   We both liked the book much more than other textbooks we'd seen but my one complaint is that it does not cover the 20th century, esp. the 2 World Wars, at all.
Recently, the wife of the author of the book was posting on another list I'm on and asked for criticisms b/c he's writing another book (world history I believe) and I mentioned that. She said he purposely left it out b/c there's just so much information on the 20th century available b/c of the information age. I still think at least a brief timeline type coverage would be helpful. we'll be doing the 20th century here this fall so I'll be on the lookout for lots of booklists! I may pick up MODG syllabus on American History for some ideas also.

I tried to post those plans last night but alas my progress came to a halt when I stepped on the rung of the three ring binder and impaled myself! Hopefully this evening will yield better results

Simona,
I can't tell you whether the books are any good or not, but this is what I ordered from Amazon a couple of days ago -- you can take a look
I order The American Story just like Thereasa has up above, The Making of America,National Geographics Our Fifty StatesWe are studying the states too, and finallyDon't know much about American History These are all reference. We'll use good literature and real books to balance out things, but I wanted visuals -- this won't give the Catholic stories, but I'm going to track down a good general saint book for that (plus I already have a Catholic Faith comes to America -- I think I missed the exact title). Let me know if you want more of a review when they finally arrive. I'm hopeful.

We love audio books. I've used Living Adventures from American History along with Catholic Faith Comes to America.
