Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hey y'all, I want to subscribe to a monthly history magazine that will be fun for the whole family ... any suggestions?

I like History Channels mag and have requested a trial issue. The Smithsonian magazine is good, but I'm worried it may be too high brow for my littles? The ones from Carus Publishing (the folks who do Cricket) look good but they're over $30/year for 9 issues !

Any others out there with a variety of topics and good reading for multiple ages? Any that you're particularly fond of?

Oh Oh Oh...I love love love...can I say this enough???...

Learning Through History

I don't know how I got through history studies without it before I found it! It is great for a unit study. I use them a lot for that. They have various "essays" I guess you could say about different subtopics on the main topic. They also include some crafts (maybe about 2), a food thing and then an older child literature unit and a younger child literature unit, both books about the topic for the month. They also include in the back, a shorter unit to use for younger kids. Also, each essay has several sidebars with website suggestions, research ideas and better yet, books to find out more.

The essays are easily read on their own by my 5th/6th grader. Last year for instance, I'd have her choose 2 or 3 essays to read from a particular magazine one week, then she'd choose one to narrate either orally or written. I read various articles, sometimes all of them, throughout a couple of weeks, out loud to the rest of the gang. Then I'd go through some narration time with them.

The pictures aren't color, probably the only complaint I can muster. My kids don't seem to care though.

And it is pricey, it's $32 for 6 issues a year. But to me, you are getting a whole unit study with generally twaddle-free book recommendations to go along with it 6 times a year! Also...check out the website some too...you can order back issues!

KackyK -- thanks for the link -- I'm going to order their Ancients Bundle and see how that goes ...

I'd really like a magazine that wasn't topic specific ... but this looks like a great resource!
