Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I’m choosing a 6th grade world history text. I’m following MA’s world history schedule. Can anyone can compare The Story of Mankind to The Story of the World (Sonlight’s choice)? I’m looking for an attractive, readable and engaging text.

Thank you for any insight.

My kids really liked the Story Of the World. It is very engaging.

I have just started the Story of Mankind. So far, it is an easy read, but he really just gives a quick overview of ancient civilizations. It isn't as meaty as SOTW.

Also, when it first came in the mail I handed it off to Sydney without reviewing it. The first chapter talks about the evolution of man. So, my dear daughter has proclaimed the author to be ignorant and doesn't want to read any farther. I am honestly amazed how strongly my kids feel about the subject.

To be fair, it is just a little section without a lot of weight given to it. It is easily shrugged off or skipped in my opinion.

I tried SOM starting with the second half of the book and my then 11 dd had problems following it. Maybe it is because we didn't start from the beginning of the book-if we had maybe she would've gotten used to his writing style.Anyhow the chapters were long and she found them difficult to follow. Also there are no natural breaks in the chapters which makes it difficult to break the chapters over several days. The vocabulary of SOM, IMO, is more challenging and the reading level higher.
My kids really like the STOW and had no trouble following it.
