Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone done the Prairie Primer Unit Studies? We plan to do that this school year. I'm rather new to Unit Studies and I thought this looked interesting and fun. Plus it has so much in it I figure I won't have to be as creative in figuring out what to do!   Since it isn't Catholic I figure we'd add in saints and Popes from the time era.

We'll combine this with a big timeline we'll put up on our wall.

Anyone have any suggestions, advice or comments?!

Thanks!

We used the PP for 3 of the books.
Brigid is 11 .
I did the Little House books as a read aloud. I followed the science suggestions and did many non-fiction supplements from the library's children's wing for additional info. Brigid really enjoyed the PP. I also let her interest guide us. When she had an interest in something, we did more reading and activities on that subject area.
We did a lapbook for our last Little HOuse book.
Because we did the reading and projects together I was able to explain the non-Catholic activities of the Ingalls family.

We have *gasp* never done a lapbook.      I just heard about them (here naturally!) only a few months ago and since it was the end of school figured I'll try some this next school year and just finish up this year with what we were already doing.

Thanks!

For our Plum Creek lapbook we just found ways to display the stuff we liked from the PP.
For our states and capitols Brigid cut out 10 stars, each point had the state name on one side and the cap on the other. We punched 3 holes in the stars and stitched them to the folder.
Made a flap book(?) to show the steps on making the railroad bed.
Because they lived in DeSmet, a small book about Father Desmet was appropriate.
Also some lift books about the "cell defenders", scarlet fever and a pretty copywork about how fast train travel was.
Really , whatever your children like can be displayed. It actually gave us something new to do at the end of the year.
A big pack of fancy cutting scissors and some fancy paper have helped us start. I will be looking for more supplies over the summer. Brigid likes ties and bows so we will be on the lookout for riveting tools.
Google searches for images helped with some of the railroad pictures and Fatehr Desmet pictures.

We used PP several years ago when we were first homeschooling. We enjoyed it but beware...there are a lot of projects and you should not feel like you need to do them all. As stated above choose things that interest you...BUT try some new things also.

We really enjoyed using the program so much we were able to use it for most of our curriculum that year. We just added math and through in some spelling and dictation from the part we were reading each week.

What age would you say to use Prairie Primer -- I like what I see and "hear" from y'all, and am wondering if I can use it for my little ones (1st grade, k, and a very active almost 3-yrold !)

Any advice or comments?

I would follow the guidelines that Margie gave for the appropriate age level: Grade 3-6. For now just enjoy the stories with your children, and possibly the simpler picture LHOP books would work best for the age group you have! I remember being so anxious to get going with these books when my kids were little because I had so enjoyed them myself as a child! Be patient and before you know it you will have a 3rd grader on your hands!

We have used the PP twice. My son used it in the 3rd and then again in the 6th. I enjoyed it both times, but even more the second time around because I was more relaxed with it and really able to have fun with it. We have used all of the unit studies at Margie's site. My daughter loved the Anne of Green Gables unit, and now I am doing the Narnia unit with my boys.

Do heed the warning given above of not trying to do all the listed activities each day. Mix and match so you have a well balanced curriculum and truly all you need to add in is Math!

Have fun!

www.cadroncreek.com

This is not a Catholic Site, but she does not promote anything that is anti-Catholic. Whenever I use her unit studies I just add Catholic stuff in! :)
Margie wrote the PP and the WTBRM. The FUFI study on Narnia was written by someone else, and edited by Margie.
Enjoy your visit there.

How does the PP differ from Little House in the Classroom? We are using this, and I'm wondering if any of you have used it.
