Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are studying the middle ages and I'd love to study an *author* of that time, Geoffrey Chaucer. We have Chanticleer and the Fox (thanks, MacBeth, for reminding me of it). But are there any other Canterbury Tales that were attempted in picture book format for kids? I'm looking at appealing to 7 to 10 year olds... Thank you in advance.

We have a great book: Geoffrey Chaucer Canterbury Tales

Selected, translated and adapted by Barbara Cohen.
Illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman (she's great!)

ISBN: 0-688-06201-6

It's hardbound, includes the prologue, nun's priest's tale, pardoner's tale, wife of bath's tale, and the franklin's tale (with each of their prologues).

We thoroughly enjoyed reading this aloud. Such a hoot!

Julie

I have A Taste of Chaucer: Selections from The Canterbury Tales, ed. by Anne Malcolmson.

"Keeping Chaucer's verse form, she has used his own words and has edited and translated from the original Middle English where necessary ... There is a brief introduction to Chaucer's life and times, as well as an introduction to each of the stories ... a glossary gives additional information."

It was published in 1964 and I found it at a library sale, so hopefully your library hasn't thrown it out yet.

We loved the Trina Schart Hyman book, although we also enjoyed The Canterbury tales adapted by Geraldine McCaughrean. Believe it or not, after reading both books, we preferred the McCaughrean adaptation slightly (it included more stories), although the illustrations in the Hyman book made it a more beautiful book to own.

My dh and my nine year old are reading together ( off and on!) The Canterbury Tales re-told by Geraldine McCaughrean. Like Alice, we like this re-telling.
