Can anyone compare MA's World History text The Story of Mankind by Van Loon with The Old World and America by Furlong? How about MA's American History text Sea to Shining Sea with Pioneers and Patriots?

I am trying to create my curriculum for my rising 6th grader. I own P&P and OW&A. It would save me some $ if I used the texts I already have. It is my understanding that the texts are just a spine and that much of her learning will come from the additional reading. How many additional books/week do you require for American History and World History? Is the text book only read, or does your child narrate these?

Do your middle schoolers create notebooks to showcase what they've learned?

Do any of you follow the MA Geography and Earth Studies for level 3? How is it working? I'm afraid I need to keep things VERY simple or it just won't happen.

STory of Mankind is online so you can get an idea of what it is like.

Compared to Old World and America:

SOM is secular; OWA is Catholic
SOM is written in narrative, literary form; OWA is written in more expository textbook form, clear but more dry.

Both are about on the same reading level (I would say -- 5th to 7th grade) but SOM uses more complex sentence form.

I haven't seen From Sea to Shining Sea but I have All Ye Lands. It is a textbook and Catholic, like Pioneers and Patriots, but more modern with colored illustrations.

Hope that helps a bit.

We love From Sea to Shining Sea and All Ye Lands. We got burned out on Father Furlong and found these texts to be very refreshing. We go to the library 2x a week and find history books and biographies to dovetail with the chapters. Maybe two shortish library books each week is enough. I don't want them to feel like they never want to "meet Ben Franklin" ever again. The texts have CMer type activities and suggestions at the end of each chapter, too. We love, love, loved them. I plan to use them with all the middle schoolers ahead.
