My husband's parents are leaving tomorrow for a whole summer in Alaska! They are driving their RV there and back!
They are keeping a blog and we've got their itinerary and several maps. The boys are very excited to follow along with their trip, and I thought it would be a perfect time for an informal Alaska study this summer.
So, any suggestions for this trail? Topics, resources, activities? Any and all ideas would be most appreciated!
TIA!

Well I know Alaska is going to be very near and dear to Theresa's heart pretty soon, perhaps she's got a few things up her sleeve!!
Sounds fun Dawn, we wish them a safe and enjoyable journey!

What a fantastic time they will have!
You can follow along with us, too on our Alaska adventure this summer starting in mid june. We spent the entire summer in Alaska a couple of years ago and saw a good chunk of the interior of the state, but this time we will be in a new place for us-Kodiak, which is entirely different from the interior. In fact, dh is there already!
I have tons of resources on Alaska and can get you just about anything you want, including an entire Alaska Wildlife Curriculum. It is a huge and diverse place, so there is MUCH to study!
I am going out of town this weekend to take dd to her SAT test, but I can get back with you early next week.
But for now topics could include:
Goegraphy-just how big is it? Way big!
Iditarod and the Balto story
Interesting Ecosystems: Tundra, Taiga, alpine, temperate rainforests
Glaciers-rivers of ice
Whales-migration patterns
Puffins-so cute!!!
Salmon life cycle-fascinating biochemical/physical changes allowing for migrations
Polar bears-retreating sea ice issues
Grizzly bears (esp Kodiak brown bears!)
seals, sea lions and walruses
Alaska Natives: MANY tribes
Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley
Wolves and their fascinatingbehaviors
Moose-gotta love 'em
Caribou migrations
Musk Oxen-wonderful, soft fibers from their undercoat
Volcanos-lots of those, many active
Tsunami-Good friday quake, I believe.
King Crab- the "Deadliest Catch!"
Halibut-weird and wonderful fish!
Ice carving and the international ice carving championships
Russian Orthodox churches...
Ummm, can you tell I'm kinda fond of the place?

And if you want to cover the political aspect, you could dig into the entire Denali/Mt. McKinley controversy!!

Thanks so much for all the great ideas, ladies! And Theresa, WOW, thank you for such a comprehensive list! We will be following along with your Alaskan adventure as well!
Tina, I just requested a copy of Alaska's Three Bears from my library - it's on its way.
I'm so excited about all this, you'd think *we* were going to Alaska!

Do we get a link to the site or is it private? I would love to follow their travels - as I sure my father would as well. He's talked about doing that for ages.
