Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm going to start Story of the World with my 1st grader next year. I just saw this Galloping the Globe in a catalog and wondered if anyone else had used it. There is a link to a sample lesson. Would one of you veterans mind checking it out for me and telling me what you think? Would it be overkill with SOTW? Any and all thoughts are welcome!!

Melissa,

I'm planning on using it next year, so I own it, but haven't used it yet. It looks like you can use this as much or as little as you want - more in depth for your older kids, and more fun, simple stuff for your youngers. It's geared for elementary ages. The literature and activity suggestions look great to me, but many require additional resources, like Geography books, an atlas, a science program called "Considering God's Creation".

You could definitely use it along with SOTW, but you would just have to pick and choose which activities you want to do - everything would be overkill. The book is only $25, so it's a great resource to have on hand I think.

I used it a few years ago (loosely) and my family enjoyed it. I say loosely, because my library didn't have many of the books, so I used the theme and activity ideas as a jumping off point for our own studies.

We took our time and would use SOTW as our central history "text" (we have the audio CD). Then when we hit something interesting, we would go off and study that part of the world. Like when we got interested in Ancient Egypt, we wound up doing a whole study of Africa (using Galloping the Globe). We didn't do both during the same week, we would exhaust one (interest wise) and jump to the other for some "refreshment".    If I remember correctly, one of the main books recommended was a Protestant Missionary Stories books - we skipped it at the time (after reading a few stories from it since we had it from using a Sonlight Core it was in) but I think if I re-did GTG I would add Catholic Saint stories.

If you *need* someone to lay down lesson ideas for you, I think it's a good book and interesting for kids who like geography (my kids were really into it that year). If you wind up often going off on your own and making up your own ideas, you could probably do just as well with a good library and a few internet searches and blackline maps.

HTH
