Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 16 year old dd is asking for to study the Medieval Period and Renaissance next year. We have covered Ancient History and American History well. Any suggestions on books or guides to use.

Thanks!

My ds will be in 8th next year and we will be studying the Medieval Period as suggested by MODG. Some of the books he will be reading are:
Augustine Came to Kent
Fingal's Quest
Son of Charlemagne
Castle and Cathedral (by David Macauley)
The Story of King Arthur and His Knights
The Magna Charta
Adam of the Road
The Door in the Wall
The Black Arrow
Boy Knight of Reims

We'll be using The Old World and America as a spine.
Since my ds is only 13 you may find some of these books too easy for your ds. I just thought I'd list them to give you some ideas. I know this time period can be difficult as the resources that aren't Catholic have an entirely different perspective. The ones above are all pretty Catholic though.
HTH a little!

I know that ABCs of Christian Culture has some very neat map work on the Middle Ages. Our unit is old and not designed for high schoolers but I have heard that they have since come up with a high school version. This might be worth checking out as a spine. In any case, I do remember my dc making maps where we put Universities of Europe on the map and date founded (there were tons of them founded by the church during the Dark Ages - so I never had to debunk the standard error of how the church prevented true learning in the middle ages, etc. I also remember a map of religious orders. These were great activities that we will do again with our others.

There are a number of books that have been reprinted that are set during the time period - We got the first 3 from OLV and Crusader KIng we picked up at a convent bookstore.

Men of Iron
Lances of Lynwood
The Gauntlet
Crusader King

There are also a number of Saints Lives - Benedict would be one but also the Irish Saints who re-Christianized Europe after the Barbarian invasions.

Ivanhoe would be another book for the period.

I know we found a beautiful library book on Illuminated Manuscripts (wish I could remember its title). It would also be a great time to listen to Gregorian chant.

This was an ongoing fascination with my 2nd dd for a while and she can tell you different ways to try and make chain mail using pop top lids or coiled wire. She has also made swords, sheaths and gotten into sword fighting and archery. (The children tried to forge weapons using the grill). Wish she'd been as fascinated by all the fancy stitching, calligraphy, etc.

Janet
