Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm reading "David of Wales" from Once Upon a Time Saints next week to my dc. Anyone know how to pronounce these Welsh names and towns?

Sant of Ceredigion
Brychan
Henfynyw
Llangfelach
Glascwm
Gwent
Mynyw
Rhygyfarch

I'm far from an expert, and have no idea how to transliterate for someone who speaks American , but this should help ...

"w" and "y" are vowels, pronounced "oo" and short "i" (as in "it") respectively

"ch" is a rolled-at-the-back-of-the-throat "k" sound as in Scottish "loch"

"ll" is pronounced "thl"

"c" is hard, like "k"

"rh" is just "r"

So you get ...

Brychan = Brichan (rolled ch)
Henfynyw = Henfinioo
Llangfelach = Thlangfelach (rolled ch)
Glascwm = Glazcoom
Gwent = Gooent
Mynyw = Minioo
Rhygyfarch = Rigifarch (rolled ch)

... more or less! Whether it would be recognisable to a native Welsh speaker I'm not sure

It is a difficult language to learn--Not many people in this country speak it (or for that matter teach it). I did have a friend in Austin that meet with a group of friends in order to learn Welsh. It sounded beautiful.

Good luck with the pronunciation.

Hooray for me! I actually got some of those correct, Kathryn! I guess my 3 years in the UK paid off! I love the sound of Welsh when it's spoken or (especially) sung. We have a CD of Celtic Lullabies that inlcudes several in Welsh. My favourite is "My Gysgi Di Maban" The liner notes appear to have gone temporarily missing or I'd type the English for the title as well. Beautiful four-part carol.

dawn,

I just saw this as I finally got an internet connection here in Suriname and have been trying to catch up. You've received some good advice already, but here goes (bear in mind that the emphasis or stress is always on the penultimate syllable in Welsh, though in your first example, the -ion is sort of considered one syllable so you would stress the -dig- part:

Sant of Ceredigion

sant of ker-egg-e-dig-ee-on

Brychan
bruh-chan (where the "ch" is like in the Scottish loch and if i write "uh" I mean like you are saying "uh - that is gross....")

Henfynyw

hen-vuh-new

Llangfelach

llang-vel-ach (ll is a sound made by placing your tongue as if to say L and then simply blowing gently).

Glascwm

glass -koom (means blue valley)

Gwent - as it looks
Mynyw - muh-new
Rhygyfarch - rhuh-guh-vahr-ch (rh is said by sort of blowing as you say an r)

Sorry if I confused more than anything. Have fun! The trick is pronouncing Welsh correctly without spitting all over your your conversational partner!!
