Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Help!

We've used Saxon for years, but I'm not thrilled with the Algebra course. My son just learns a new concept and then they move on to a new one the very next lesson. I think they call this the spriral approach. We've always used MCP or BJU for the first 5 years of math. They concentrate on one concept per chapter with cummulative reviews.

Anyway, I have to then sit down with him and do the new algebra problems along with him. Yes, we have the Dive CD and he has done math really well in the past.

I just ordered Key to Algebra. I actually like their booklets. We have a few of the Algebra ones. Anybody use Key to Algebra with success?

Any suggestions?
Thanks!

We've used Saxon with some and not with others. I think different things just work with different kids. I'd try the Key to Algebra books and see how they fit with your ds. You never know till you try!

Thank you, Leonie!

Your unschooling has helped me to be much more relaxed with schooling.

We used Saxon 8/7 for pre-algebra (had never used Saxon before) and ditched it for that same reason - very little practice on the current concept, and a huge number of problems covering all the previous stuff.

Ds13 just finished the Key To algebra books (we'd used the fractions, percents and decimals sets before). I like how the concepts are presented and they have plenty of practice before moving on. However, the books by themselves are not an entire algebra course. We are now doing TEaching TExtbooks algebra and just doing the stuff not covered by KTA, plus repeating some of the stuff he had trouble with. When we get to geometry, I Plan to use the TT book first and only use the Key books as extra practice if needed (I already have them).

We have used Key to Algebra successfully with two sons so far.   As Karen says, it is more of a substantial pre-Algebra program than actual algebra.   With my present 8th grader, we will go on to use Jacob's Algebra and test out of the units he already knows.
