Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone used or heard of Shiller Math. It is a Montessori based math program. It looks interesting to me. We are just plain stuck with math. The kids are just not getting it , I was just wondering if this may be a more logical approach for us. Thanks for the input!

Kirsten,
There are a couple of threads that discuss Shiller math...and, another one .

We've used Shiller for several years and love it. The kids were bored with workbooks and find Shiller much more exciting.

We have used Shiller for almost a year. It has been fun and ds is learning "how" math works. Not much repetition or drill, a lot of manipulative work, some writing-but few worksheets with 20 problems--maybe once per book
Mr. Shiller is very responsive to questions and seems to answer his own e-mail. There is a Yahoo group though it is very quiet most of the time it is helpful.
The negatives that I have heard and sometimes agree with-quality of manipulatives could be better and cost of the program. I agree with quality of manipulatives and Shiller says they are working on that. I have other manipulatives from when I was considering other programs so I use those sometimes. Cost, I had a problem with originally but now see that one kit could last 2 years. We started with Kit 1(starts at age 4) at 8 years last April and are in the final book and have slowed down considerably. I did buy Kit 2 and can see that lasting a few years too! Kit 1 is going to be used with dd(4) soon as she can sit still a few minutes. There is not a lot of drill so some parents feel their kids are behind the school kids. Mr. Shiller feels they are learning how math works and the rest will follow over time-and I do see that. A year ago I was worried about ds's addition and subtraction facts and him being behind--he seems to have that down pat as he was calculating how much he had left on his gift card in ToysRUs the other night. Now, we need to work more on multiplication and division which were introduced last week. You can, and I do at times, supplement with a simple worksheet and some fun reading from the library.
All in all a fun program, the CD and songs are a big hit in this house--even dd(4) runs around singing the left/right song and the Even/Odd Alien song..
Hope that helps
Anne

We have been happy with Shiller Math. My four dds are currently using the program. At first, I thought the price was high but knowing that four children are getting to use this makes the price worthwhile to me.

One of the aspects of the program that I like is that the lessons in general are short and sweet and to the point. On those days when we are crunched for time, I can still get in a decent math lesson. If I need to expand on it, I can do it the next day. However, I can add more work as necessary. I am not a slave to the program. I plan on purchasing Kit 2 when we are finished with Kit 1
