Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What does anyone know about Shiller Math? Does anyone have personal experience with it?

I believe I first heard about it on the CCM list. It sounds really good and I'm seriously considering purchasing the program for my ds 5, but I'm a little turned off by their aggressive marketing. After visiting the website, I get e-mails almost every day. They offer huge discounts if you tell your friends. All this isn't bad if they are a decent company, but the aggressive marketing makes me wonder if it's all show and no substance.

Also I have a ds 11 who is quite behind in math and if the product is as good as it seems to be, it might be worthwhile to look into their second level program for older ds too. My son is currently using MUS and we are happy, but Shiller seems even more hands-on and it seems as if there is pretty good support to help if there are problems.

Any input on either age level product would be very helpful.

God Bless,

Richelle

Richelle,

I'm looking at it also for my girls. I've seen it adverised in my Montesorri magazine. I don't know of anyone who has used it, though. I like the manipulatives that they offer. I'll let you know if I get it.

Peace,

Mare

I think it's a great program! Here are the reasons I chose Shiller...(I have the first kit)

1. Appeals to every learning modality, so I know it will work for each learning style
2. Very hands-on (ds is very hands-on)
3. It moves from concrete to abstract (see it then learn the concept). It gives a solid understanding of numbers instead of just teaching kids to memorize this fact and that fact.
4. No teacher prep! Just pick up the book, grab the manipulatives you need, and go!
5. The diagnostic tests (free) to show where your child has gaps and exactly what activites they need to complete to fill in those gaps
6. Non-consumable...once you buy it you have all you need (plus free downloads)
7. Gets kids out of the workbook and really learning!

Okay, do I sound like a Shiller Rep yet?    I did sell it at one convention, but I was already "sold" on it waay before that. They are a new company, but I think they are a solid, fun, complete math program that has kids coming back begging for more. You may want to join the Shiller Math Yahoo Group. Moms (and dads) will give you honest answers to their likes/dislikes there.

Thanks for the information! I'm so glad it's working for you. It looks so good, but it's also so much money to pay out if it really doesn't measure up. It's so good to hear it really is a good program. I didn't know there was a yahoo group. I'll go visit there and get a feel for it from others who are using it.

Richelle,

I ended up ordering just the three 4-8 books. I had made most of the Montessori math materials in the Shiller Kit over these last few years. There are just a few items that I don't have.

I'm starting with my 3 year old girls now and in the summer I will add my 5 yr. old. I'm going to let her finish up her other Math book first. This will also give me time to order the materials that I don't have yet. I would imagine that I could give you a better review in a few months.

Peace,

Mare
