Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a problem that has been developing.....we use Rod & Staff at present, I have children using Grades 1,4 & 5. I am noticing with all my children that they go through their work quite slowly, especially with adding and subtracting....the other day I had my 11 year old pondering over 40 - 38! I have my own 'mental' way of doing these things myself (I seem to 'visualize' a number line in my mind that almost seems tangible? - something like that) and I am having trouble conveying it to them. Is there a book or booklet, website, anything that could help me train my children in quick, mental techniques in these simple but bedrock basics?

Singapore Math has a whole section in the early grades on mental math and even teaches various strategies. MUS does a little bit of this. These programs were helpful for me because I was never a math in the head person. However, my dh does most of his math in his head and he does funny drills/games at the table (he is a natural teacher)trying to get all of us to think mathematically - rounding up and down to 10s, counting backwards and seeing shortcuts.   Hopefully I am improving somewhat. (I was a math major that still counted on my fingers in college . I'm sure you could do this since it sounds like you do this yourself, but if you really want something - look at the early grades in Singapore Math.

We find that playing oral maths games and just doing some of the text work orally helps with number skills. As does simple card games that involve calculations - 13, Up and Down the River, etc.

Those number dot cards, up to 100, and hundred boards/charts help with number sequencing - a forerunner of addition and subtraction. I think Ruth Beechick's books "You Can Teach Your Child Successfully" and The Three Rs series has some activities with the hundred chart and the addition/subtraction charts.
