Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DD (almost 8) used MCP in K, and Math Mammoth (with lots of tears) the last two years. She is entering 3rd grade this year and still is in tears over subtraction. She counts up on her fingers for addition (doesn't worry me much).

I am thinking of giving her MUS Alpha this year. I am wondering if the block manipulatives will help her. (We did use an abacus last year with Math Mammoth).

Also, is focusing on just adding/subtracting for a year enough? I worry about not covering measuring, time, money, etc.

Alpha covers more than adding and subtracting. There should be something on the website that shows everything taught. It's a different approach than MM so it may be what she needs.

MUS is an excellent program. I really learned a lot going through alpha and beta with ds. I feel like I am much better at addition and subtraction and I have quite a few new ways to think about it now that will help me be more confident as I prepare to teach my girls.

I also highly recommend the videos that can be found at Education Unboxed
These videos can be used to supplement any program and you can easily use the MUS blocks instead of cuisinaire rods (although I myself prefer cuisinaire and use them with MUS -   can you tell I'm not the kind of person who uses things the way they're set up? ).
