My ds is in RS level D, and we've just got to the part about check numbers for addition and subtraction.
I was unfamiliar with this fascinating concept... I watched the RS tutorial, and wow! That is about the coolest thing I have heard of in a long time.
My question is, aside from the gee whiz factor, is this something your dc have really taken to and used all the way through division and multiplication?
it seems like such a handy tool for checking work. And fun.

Once my kids "got it" how it works, we really didn't continue with it. Maybe we should have, I don't know. But they seem okay without doing it every.single.time
It is amazing though isn't it...totally one of those "geez I wish I knew this when..." moment!

I wish my kids would use it more. I think that it is a brilliant way to work standardized test and check your work.
I just personally used check numbers today to see if ds got the right answer on a story problem that he was having problems with.
I need to encourage it more!!!!

I didn't get check numbers the first time they were introduced, so my oldest didn't really benefit from them. But son #2 really likes them. We just used it today for multiplication... and it's how my son knew he did his problem wrong, and redid it!
The only problem is that every once in a blue moon, one he will manage to get the check number and the answer to match up... and they both will be wrong!! But that's rare.

Here's a link: what are check numbers
If you search "check numbers" on their site, more explanations also come up.

Thanks, ladies. I think I will have my ds watch the on line tutorial with me, since I felt I did a very fumbly job of explaining it yesterday.
I think it could be a very useful thing with multiplication and division coming up more often for us.

At first I thought check numbers were cool, and then I thought they were a pain b/c they slowed us down. Dd seems to take forever to calculate them. But, then, I had an epiphany and realized that the check numbers would/could be a fab little tool that she uses for the rest of her life. With testing coming up next month, I would LOVE for her to use check numbers. Now I am requiring check numbers all.the.time to help her build the habit of using them. I even hope that she gets some of her problems wrong so she will see the benefit of the check numbers.
