Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This month, we are learning multiplication with my second grader. She does fairly well at it, using Teaching Textbooks. They do recommend in the book/CD lectures to just work at memorizing the facts. Aside from the drill I did in school, I have no idea how best to do this! Any tips?

we've just used multiplication squares.. I let them have a lot of the control for it.. but I explain that when they know the facts really well they should be able to fill in a mulitplication square in 5 minutes or less. They think it's fun. it's a challenge to them to be able to do it.

We start off using "structured drill like explained in this video. It seems to help put the "patterns" in place in their minds.

We work on one group at a time. I will just drill with a certain number in the kitchen while I'm working for a few minutes. Then when we're done working on "the current number" I'll mix it up with the other numbers that they already know.

Once they sort of have them down, THEN we bring out the flashcards and they do random drilling with each other and I'm out of it! Wha-hooo!!!!!!

Obviously, start with the easy ones.....something like this order is what is usually done in most math programs:

0, 1, 10, 2, 11, 5, 3, 6, 9, 7, 8, 12

We began with skip counting, and we do the drills, but my boys also like watching the old Schoolhouse Rock: Multiplication Rock from so many years ago. I think you can find it on Youtube, now. The only one the boys don't like is the "Figure Eights" one.
